Internal Display not working, external is.

I am having a similar issue with a 2010 iMac 21.5".

I can get an external monitor to work fine (I'm actually using it now).

I have tried resetting PRAM and NVRAM with no success.

In system report under Graphics/Displays, I can only see my external monitor connected via Mini Display Port adapter.

I have tried looking at the screen with a flashlight (torch), i cannot see any forms of life.

Any ideas?

I'm having the same problem...if I find any solutions I'll let you know

I replaced my backlight controller and it didn't resolve the problem. None of the other connections appears to be damaged so I think it's either the replacement display cable I got is not working or I may have shorted something on the logic board. Everything is still working correctly with a plug in monitor, so the logic board works fine otherwise.

Did you fix this? I have the same problem. LED 1 and 2 light up, then LED 3. Never LED 4. LED 4 should light up and off if there is any video signal from the logic board (?)

Did you buy a new LVDS cable? How does the LVDS connection look on your logic board side?

So after reading your post I would not buy a new backlight controller since I wonder if that is the right place to start. I also read someone changed the backlight controller and LCD and still not working. This is not easy!

hi did you end up fixing it?

I have not yet fixed mine. From what I've read, chances are either the socket for the video cable is damaged and/or improperly seating the video cable and powering up the computer fried something in the logic board. So replacing the logic board sounds like the next step, but then it's an issue with cost.

Sadly, it sounds like the display assembly is gone.

Has anyone opened the system yet? If not you could try checking the cable connections. Follow this IFIXIT guide: iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2389 Display Replacement.

Be careful as the cables are on the short side! Check the vertical sync cable (Step 5) and the data cable (Step 7). The data cable can be easily damaged so use extra care. Note the direction of the connection of the connector as you don't want to put in backwards!

If the cables are fully seated then its time for a new display. You may want to think this though as the cost of the display is around $800.

Some of these machines from this year had a recall on the video. Please give us the last four figures of your serial number and maybe I can look it up. The number is one the bottom of your stand.

Why won't people at least see if the repair is free?

But doesn't it void recalls if you cause the problem by tinkering? my serial is VDNN

My iMacs last figures are - 5DNN

When I start up the iMac LED 1 and 2 light, then LED 3. But not LED 4. Meaning there is no video signal? Could it be the GPU is damaged?

What was Apple supposed to do about this problem? Change of LCD? Change of motherboard? I'm curious..
