DC IN Voltage Fails TechToolPro Diagnostic

I have a MacBook Air that sometimes doesn't startup at all.

So I ran the TechTool Pro 8 diagnostic on it and it has a sensor failure: DC In failed at 16.96v.

Does anyone know if there is a way I can fix this other than a new motherboard?

You may be using the wrong power supply. The Air uses a 45 watt power supply at 14.5 volts. All the other laptop products use a 16.5 volt supply. So if you hook up a MacBook Pro power supply you're going to see 16.5V to 17V on the DC-in rail (depending on the accuracy of the sensor).

Solution retenue

The Mag-Safe is built into the I/O board. There does not seem to be a repair guide for this machine but there is one for the A1466 2012. Take a look: MacBook Air 13" Mid 2012 I/O Board Replacement

I just replaced the part for a brand new one from IFIXIT and it didn't fix the problem.

I'm still get the DC-in Rail 0 Failed at 16.67 V.

Anybody else managed to fix it?

You'll need to trace the voltage from the I/O board back to the main board as you have a disconnect along the pathway.

I had the same issue and I fixed it by using the right charger. No more errors now!

Are you saying that you can use a Thunderbolt 1 port to charge a MacBook Air??

Use a genuine Apple 45W charger. Fake chargers do not have a stable voltage and can cause this issue.

Oh, the *correct* charger! I thought he was charging through the right side—i.e. the Thunderbolt port.
