How to start up the computer?

Was working properly then one day when I tried to turn it on, the start up couldn't work. I just kept getting a screen warning to press down start up button for few seconds which I did many times. But still it never proceeds further after pressing down start up for a few seconds. Start up instruction page just keeps popping up. What can I do about this? Thank you.

Options

Try starting holding down the "shift" key to start in Safe Mode.

Next insert your system installation disk and start up holding down the "C" key. Go to the second screen pull down menu to Utilities -> Disk Utility and repair the hard drive.

This failing try reseating the RAM.
