I got my MacBook Pro in late 2009. It is Model A1286 with a 2.66 Intel i7 processor. I ran it through your ID program and it shows it as a mid 2012 model, but I got it three years earlier. I need to replace the battery and need to insure I have the correct one. Please help.

I've corrected the model link.
I'm also posting links for the correct battery and for the replacement guide. It's a fairly easy swap, but it does require a specialized tool: the Y1 tri-wing screwdriver. Apple uses these weirdo screws to hold your battery to the computer chassis, in order to prevent you from doing exactly what you're about to do.
The tri-wing screwdriver is available from iFixit as a standalone screwdriver, and as a bit in their screwdriver kits.

The Mid 2009 and Mid 2010 generations use the same battery.
For future reference: The model number isn't a great way to ID your computer. The model ID (A1286, in your case) identifies the form factor, rather than a specific generation of the model. A1286 is the model number for every 15" Unibody MacBook Pro (October 2008-October 2013), regardless of the specific features of any of the seven generations inside that form factor case.
A better method for hardware ID is to use the model identifier, which appears in the format (ComputerModelName)X,X. A Mid 2009 MacBook Pro would be IDed as MacBookPro5,3; your Mid 2010 is MacBookPro6,2. You can locate your model identifier from the About This Mac screen by clicking the System Report button (10.9, 10.10) or the More Info... button (10.8 and earlier). This will open System Profiler, an Apple utility that gives a comprehensive description of the hardware and installed software on your system. The model identifier is a few lines down in the Hardware tab, which is the first screen you see when System Profiler launches.

There are 22 different A1286 models. Please give us the last four figures of your serial number located on the back of your machine. To insure this is correct go under the Apple inure left hand corner to "about this Mac". > more info > Hardware. The second line up from the bottom gives the serial number, see if it matches the bottom number.

The serial number is W80440MUAGZ. Apple identifies it as a Mid 2010 2.66 GhZ i7 model MC 373xx/A. I think this must be correct.

There are three different batteries.
There is the user removable battery that is silver in color for 2008 machines with two covers on the bottom. This is the one that is removable by a latch. A1281 is this battery's model number.
There is the battery for 2009 and 2010 machines that is not user removable per say - you have to unscrew the bottom, which is one piece on this model, and then unscrew the battery's proprietary screws to get to it. This is an A1321 battery. It plugs into the SIDE of the motherboard which is a pain in the @%^ - this is instantly recognizable because you CANNOT UNPLUG THE BATTERY WITHOUT REMOVING IT FROM THE LAPTOP FIRST. This is how you tell it is an A1321 battery - it is black in color.
There is the battery for the 2011, 2012, 2013 A1286 models which plugs into the TOP of the board. Since it plugs into the top you can easily unplug the battery from the logic board without removing the battery. This is an A1382 battery, and is black in color.
So, depending on what your battery looks like, and how it plugs in, it can either be an A1281, A1321, or A1382 battery. This number is also written on the battery itself. Order a replacement battery for your laptop based on the model number that you read from the battery, because A1286 machines use different batteries depending on the year. Also as always, avoid eBay & Amazon's batteries, they are trash 99% of the time.

My "About This Mac" identifies it as a Mid 2010.
