Does apple reprograms touch id?

For example, my touch id stops working and I'm out of warranty coverage, does apple replaces the part and repograms the phone to the touch id sensor?

Yes, if they replace the display, the Touch ID button has to be replaced as well, they must have a way to reprogram it.

From what I know, they will replace the display assembly (the entire front half of the phone) altogether if:

the display is broken,

the top sensors does not work,

the receiver still does not work after replacing just the receiver,

Home button/Touch ID does not work.

The cost for OOW display replacement is around $100, if replacing the display doesn't resolve the issue, they will replace the phone.

Ex-Genius here...

Apple replace the entire display for Touch ID related issues.

They use a "calibration" machine that pairs the new Touch ID to the logic board processor.

An actual custom "machine" instead of a generic computer that talks to the phone through USB?

par

Yes that's correct they have several of the machines which the iPhone will sit inside and go through various tests and meanwhile it will pair Touch ID

par

I did see pictures of those things. It requires Apple internal servers to authorize pairing is it right?

par

Partially yes, it also requires Apple specific applications and processes to run.

With talks of Touch ID being integrated into the next generation displays it leaves us tech people in a bad position. Hopefully someone finds a simple software solution for pairing...

par

This machine is probably just a well-staged cover up. You mean to tell me that there is a machine that's only purpose in life is to pair and calibrate iphones? No. I singlehandedly (yeah, that's right) discovered a way to pair a touch id button, and although it's still just theoretical now, it absolutely does NOT require a giant machine. And furthermore, it can theoretically be done without any top secret machines at all. This machine is just there so geniuses can pair iphones without learning about the ACTUAL pairing process, and leaking it to the public. Yes, I must mention, my own pairing procedure is theoretical at this point, and I still need some more knowledge about the details to be able to achieve success.

can the chip on the touch id cable that stores this key be reprogrammed? is it an eeprom? a uveprom? or is it non-reprogrammable, and simply a rom? I intend to figure this out.

but even if you can reprogram it, how would you get the key that the device has thats matched to it?

Is it not possible to extract this data from the previous sensor and than copy it to a new one? Trick the phone into thinking it's still the same button... My touch-id still works, but the button itself doesn't work anymore.. So i have to choose between a button or the touch-id...

par

Not possible, that's why it's called security.

par

IS it so much more secure than other devices? For example the Huawei P9, where you can swap the finerprintsensor just bij removing the rearhousing...

par

A Huawei is not the same as the iPhone! It's like comparing apples to kumquats.

When they replace the whole assembly.

they transfer the Touch ID over from your old phone.

thats why the design of the Touch ID is so easy to remove.

Because the monkeys at apple need to transfer it over, yet somehow they manage to rip it.

if that happens they will have to replace the phone for you for free!

The Touch ID is serial coded to the logicboard. apple does this out of spike because they hate DIYers.

You have anything to back that up?

When they repair home button issues, they replace the display, proving they can reprogram the button, plain and simple.

Also the key provisioning is for security, it has nothing to do with DIYers.

im not saying apple can not reprogram the Touch ID

im saying thats not something what the genius bar when you have a bad Touch ID

as a former apple employee with many close friends still employed with apple im speaking from experience.

And Tom, please enlightenment me with your vast expertise on what security reason does apple have to lock the Touch ID to the phone. The Touch ID is simply a biometric reader, the fingerprints are store locally on your phone. How does replace the the biometric sensor with an aftermarket or even an original biometric sensor a security threat.

par

Security is a little more complicated than you think. The sensor is "just" a sensor correct, however the sensor has to send the data to the phone securely and mitigate the damage if one hack is successful. Hence the data line has to be encrypted with a session-specific key, generated from a device-specific master key provisioned in the factory. The master key should not be accessible to the outside world and the provisioning process should not be able to be triggered by just anyone (to prevent wiretapping the provisioning to obtain the new master key). In this way Apple can ensure chip-to-chip security, No system or user data travels on a visible bus unencrypted, preventing anyone performing attacks using software/hardware tapping. Unless they break in the chip, dump the keys and burn them into a new chip.

I'm not saying they won't transfer the button but from what I know as of now they don't do that. And they can repair Touch ID/button issues without giving you a new phone prove that they can reprogram it.

par

There is no win or lose because this is not a fight. Sunny said Apple might be repairing the display without reprogramming Touch ID, which is good because they can offload the repair to AASPs without giving them the ability to reprogram (for security). I'm saying they can reprogram because they have done that. It's just different points.
