I've got a model A1297 sitting on my bench and it won't boot except in Single User Mode. I pulled the hard drive and plugged it into a SATA/USB adapter and it will boot my MACPRO so it's not the hard drive. I tried resetting the SMC and that didn't help. It will have the grey apple screen and the progress bar and then either go blank or reset and start over.

Hard drive have a life span about 3 years. if you had your computer longer then that most likely is your hard drive.

I 100% disagree with this notion. A HDD life span is not measured in years... it is measured in usage.

If you use your machine A LOT and you have gone through thousands upon thousands of boot sequences... writing and rewriting multiple files over and over and over again... that is what wears down the life of a drive.

Now, I get your sentiment that maybe the "average user's" HDD will only last 3 years.... but I myself am what you would call a power user and I've had HDDs last in the same machine they were shipped in for 5-7 years.

It's not a time issue, however ...this is quite possibly a HDD issue.

Have you gone through any trouble shooting steps? If so, what are they?

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode? Did it work?

Have you tried any resets like PRAM or SMC? Results?

Have you booted into AHT (hold "D" at boot until you see a pixelated old school computer icon) and run test on the hardware, including the HDD? If so, results?

We really want to help you, but with literally no information other than you're getting the eternal boot up screen, it's hard to tell you where to go next, except to start at the beginning.
