I put new batteries in the camera I have only used it a few times the lens goes part way out and just stays there I cannot see through the view finder or the screen in the back then the lens goes back in and the camera powers back off.

dtmennis, the camera most likely shuts off because of the lens error. Check on here for more information. 9 out of 10 times you will have to replace the lens. Here is a decent video that might help you out with working on your camera.
