Is this all I need for a HDD to SSD hybrid replacement?

Hello iFixit,

I have a macbook A1342. I would like to replace the hard drive to an ssd hybrid. I have the tools required (26 bit driver kit), I just don't have the drive. So do I just order the drive if I'm swapping it myself? Its this drive here>>> DRIVE ONLY OPTION?

Unless you have already created an external bootable drive to hold your OS installer you'll need this: Universal Drive Adapter. With it you can prep up the SSHD drive.

I have a western digital 500GB external. Will this do? Time Machine backed up.

It depends is it formatted with GUID & Mac OS Extended (Journaled)? Use Disk Utility to check it. If not you'll need a different drive as you don't want to loose your backup.

Yes it is formatted that way. Journaled.

You'll then need to run the OS installer to install the OS on it. To make sure its bootable reboot your system and hold the Option key to gain access to the Boot Manager and then select using the arrow keys the external drive to boot the system if it boots up, you're good to go! Don't forget to copy over the OS installer app to your external so you have it when you swept the drive.
