water damage...now working, but dim display

I fell in a pond with my iPhone in my pocket, but immediately took it out (15 sec. or less), dried it off the best I could, took the Sim card out and used a hair dryer (on low heat) to dry some more. I didn't know about the rice trick then. By the way, it was still working for about 15 minutes and I didn't realize I should have powered it off. Anyway, it will now start up, however the display is extremely dim to the point of being unusable really. I have tried resetting all of the settings and did a reset by holding the home and power buttons down. No luck, as it is still the same. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I am wondering if a cleaning may help things or I need a part. By the way the display works fine other wise.

fluid damages can do serious damage to the phone

there is a white/greenish residue that shortens the parts, this residue must be removed

disassemble the phone, use one of the guides from te right (you didn't wrote what iphone model you have - thats why i can't provide a direct link for that)

use isopropyl alcohol (>90%) and a soft paintbrush to carefully clean the parts, don't forget the connectors

let the phone dry - without a hair dryer

reassemble it and try to power it on

good luck

it will help, you also want to remember that Rice is only a first aid. You should clean the phone with isopropyl alcohol to avoid corrosion damage later on.

forget the rice, a total waste of time

will the rice still work even after its been left a few hours? or would of had to have been put in immediately for it to work?

it might still work as a first aid to draw up some of the water. Again, rice does not fix electronic components.

thanks alot!

Yes, rice will work even after a while, even after days. Rice will pull the moisture out. Sometimes there is permanent damage (rice won't fix this). Sometimes there's rust or corrosion which would require cleaning. Sometimes though, the moisture just causes a short (an example is my friend's iPhone button wouldn't work... it had been weeks). If the moisture is removed, it may fix some of the problems.

FYI: Silica packets also work.

There is a coil on the mother board that powers up the display burns out due to water damage. Only way to fix this problem is to replace the 6R6 coil.

sorry fluffy, that is not the right answer....:-) the coil is 6R8. There are also a few other things that one should try before replacing the coil....

Like what? What are the other things that I should try before replacing the coil?

After a phone is submerged, first dry it off, then stick it in a bag of rice overnight, maybe even for a day or two. Rice pulls the moisture out of the internals. This is why they put rice in salt shakers, to absorb the moisture.

You could use silica packets or purchase one of the specialty "emergency" bags, but rice works just as well.

My phone has been doing exactly the same thing since it was half submerged in water, but all I can recommend is leaving your phone in rice for at least 48-72 hours since it got water damaged. I've heard a few stories of people doing this and there phone working like new!

Good luck all!
