Why won't my iPhone turn on after replacing the battery?

So I bought an "OEM iPhone 5 replacement battery" (according to the eBay seller) and upon trying to replace it, my iPhone 5 wouldn't charge and was stuck at 17%. So I took it out and placed my old battery in, but then the phone altogether would not start. When I plugged it into my computer, the Apple icon would flash and then the charger icon indicating iTunes would show up. This screen would show as long as it was plugged into the computer. As soon as I unplugged, the screen would be unresponsive and black. Is this a fault of the eBay battery—is it capable of doing this to my phone, or did something go wrong in the replacement process? If so, what is wrong with my phone?

This doesn't sound like U2 to me. U2 failure does not occur coincidentally with battery replacement, unless the phone already had a U2 defect. Any phone should start with a new battery --even a U2 damaged phone--because new batteries always have some amount of charge.

eBay batteries are often junk, especially by any seller using the phrase OEM--which generally means low quality. No batteries are made by the OEM, Apple, that are available in the marketplace. The term OEM is only used by low quality sellers trying to prey on the conventional understanding of the term.

Most likely is physical damage to the board at or around the battery connector. Look closely under magnification. Next, get a new battery from iFixit and see what happens. Post your results.

It could be the U2 chip that is responsible for charging the battery is faulty. It might be that the new battery you purchased is to low for it to charge because of the faulty U2. There is a lot about it in this thread that might help youiPhone 5 battery replacment failed, due to U2 IC chip malfunction.

Was this a preexisting problem that just now showed up? (My phone never had trouble charging before I attempted the battery replacement. ) Or is this damage the ebay battery's fault. Could I have accidentally damaged the U2 chip when replacing the battery?

What was the problem with the original battery that required you to replace it?

I was just about to reply but someone beat me to it. (have to sleep!) Like she states if you are sure that it was charging okay and the actual charger is fine. You could have then damaged or knocked off a component around the battery connector when replacing the battery.
