Not reading internal hard drive

My Macbook isn't reading my internal hard drive. I changed the hard drive and tested it on an external hard drive reader, so I know it's not the hard drive itself. I also changed the hard drive cable. Still no luck. How do I repair this problem?

The hard drive may not be backward compatible with your machine. Please give us the make and model number of the new drive.

Hard drive works from an external drive, so this isn't the problem.
