Won't sync with Itunes anymore

The error message that I get when I plug my Ipod into my Macbook Air 11' is as follows:

iTunes could not connect to the iPod touch “Ben's ipod” because an invalid response was received from the device.

I've been plugging it into this same Macbook Air for about 3 months or so now, without issue. Suddenly this occurs. I checked for any new updates on the Macbook, and there were none. I tried restarting the computer, restarting the Ipod, and no matter what the same error message recurs. Is there any way around this problem?

I'd rather not spend $200 on a new Ipod unless I absolutely have to. It is about 8 years old, but all in all it has been functioning fairly well recently.

Thanks so much,

Ben

I have been plugging in using my PC Windows for the past year with this ipod touch without incident and only since installing itunes 12.1.3 has this "invalid response" message started showing up.

I DO NOT have the $$ to purchase a new ipod so PLEASE respond.

I got this error, too. And my old iPod couldn't be recognized by my new MacBook in this early 2016. I searched so many fixes, restart my devices, update system (my iPod couldn't update to new iOS 9 or iOS 9.3)...... but nothing of them be helpful. So I have to find a alternative to iTunes to transfer songs between iPod and computer.

Solution retenue

I went into installer cache, in c\programdata\apple. I uninstalled the latest applemobiledevicesupport6464 (in my case it was 9.3.0.15) (doubleclick on the file package it'll ask if you want to repair or remove, choose remove).

Then I went to the oldest applemobiledevicesupport I could find (always in programdata\apple\installer cache), it was version 8.2.1.3) doubleclick, install and now I can connect my Ipod 1st gen. Obviously I'll never update Itunes again...

Hope it works for someone else

Thank you jmsaubou, your answer worked for me with iPod Touch version 1.1.5 (4B1) after I installed iTunes 12.1.3.6 on Windows Vista. Uninstalled Apple Mobile Device Support, installed Apple Mobile Device Support 8.1.1.3 from Installer Cache. Started iTunes, connected 30-pin USB cable, success.

This worked for me. When I uninstalled applemobiledevicesupport6464, there was no other file in this folder, but when I plugged the ipod back in it came straight up.

Any ideas on how to do this on OSX? Can't find any similar file in the Contents of iTunes.

How do we do this on a Mac? Please help!

Try a hard reset on the iPod. Here's a video on how to do it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSf59utF...

I have tried all of the above and the problem of not being able connect to the ipod touch continues.

In addition I have contacted Apple's tech help and I did whatever they suggested. These are

(1) to do a hard reset (by pressing the home button and the button at the top simultaneously for 5 seconds)

(2) re-install itunes in my computer

(3) connect the ipod to the computer with another chord or cable

(4) re-start my computer

(5) connect the ipod to another USB port

In two days I am taking to a store here. If there is a solution I will post it here.

Till about a month or so when the new itunes came on, the device was working well. The version I am running now is 12.3.2.

If the new version of itunes is not able to connect to the old ipod touch. Apple, then, should not ask us to upgrade or they should make the old version available.

Ranga, you had exactly my thought, ie: I want an old version of iTunes that I can install on a computer that I use for simple stuff that is not connected to the internet so it will never update I believe that will solve the problem for me but where can I get said iTunes???

Something like this would be great for me. I have a first generation iTouch and it has my Dad’s engravings on it for me (he got it for me as a present years ago when the first generation phone and itouch came out back in 2008ish?) and he recently passed away so it would be nice to just keep using it.

iOS is no longer supported by Apple but you can give your device new life by instalingl Rockbox operating system on it. Google Rockbox and get a friend to help you if needed.

Apple is not supporting the earlier models of iPhone with the later versions of iTunes.

iTunes provided this error message "iTunes could not connect to the iPod touch because an invalid response was received from the device." using my Generation 1 iPhone (2007) and iTunes version 12.6.0.100

There are two solutions for this, either find an Apple computer running an earlier version of iTunes, or find a PC version of iTunes that is earlier than version 12.

I found iTunes Version 8.0.2.20 for the PC (64bit) and that worked fine on my Win8.1 PC.

Caution - If you try to reload iPhone firmware holding down the power plus home button, and keeping the home button pressed, but you dont have a working iTunes - you risk "bricking" the iPhone until you can reload the firmware with an older version of iTunes.

The FileHorse website provides many older versions of iTunes for the PC.

The first generation iPod software is just too outdated and is no longer supported by newer versions of iTunes. There is no fixing this on a newer computer. I would have to recommend that you just buy the newest iPod so it'll last you longer.

Bryan has probably given the correct but unpalatable answer. Our first generation ipods are now obsolete. All the people who suggest resetting etc should retract their suggestions, because you will just end up with nothing at all on your ipod, and no way to sync it!
