When taking pictures flash does not automatically work?

The flash should automatically pop up when the shutter button is pressed halfway when necessary. If it doesn't, a quick check would be that the selector wheel is not in the "no flash" mode. If that's correct, then the shutter arm is likely the issue. There is a small cantilever type spring that actuates the arm that sometimes gets dislodged or could be broken.
