Did I use the correct thermal adhesive tape?

Hey there,

I just replaced the HDD from my iMac 20" late 2006, because the old one was broken. I installed Snow Leopard and everything seems working fine! I used this guide to do the job: Installation d'un SSD dans les iMac Intel 20" EMC 2105 et 2118

At step 23 I was not able to keep the adhesive tape for the thermal sensor and ordered a new one ( http://www.amazon.com/Akasa-ak-tt12-80-T... (in my store it was much cheaper) ). I'm unsure if this adhesive tape is the right one for this. It has compared to liquid thermal adhesive a much lower thermal conductivity. The tape has a thermal conductivity of 0.9W/mK and a liquid thermal adhesive of 9.0W/mK.

I choosed the tape, because it was much cheaper, it is easier to handle and to remove and it seemed that it was originally used by Apple, too.

Do you think, that the thermal sensor measures a too low temperature as the thermal conductivity is that low? It would be bad as the fans wouldn't speed up when needed.

I don't know the "normal" temperatures for a HDD. As I'm writing this (and doing nothing else) the HDD has temperature of 37°C (98.6 F). Does that make sense?

That's what I tried to say, yes.

Okay so here are the temperatures. Unfortunately Temperature Gauge Pro doesn't support Snow Leopard. So I looked for another program and found Temperature Monitor from Bresink (couldn't add a link, because it was flagged as spam)

I started the computer and did stuff like streaming HD videos and copying large files to the HDD, so I think the computer won't get any hotter. After that it cooled down a little bit but not completely. I didn't know how to change the language (from german) to english of the program so I will just try to translate it:

red: HDD

purple: surrounding air (I think it's just the air in the computer)

green: CPU temperature diode

white: CPU area

turquoise: graphics processor temperature diode

orange: HDD bracket (I think this is the sensor I reattached)

pink: optical drive

blue: mainboard

There are two sensors for the HDD. The first (red) one shows the capacity of the new disc in its name , so I think the sensor is from the HDD itself. Further I can know that the sensor is still attached to the HDD as long as the orange and the red temperature is similar. Otherwise the orange temperature will drop as you said.

I hope I translated everything correct and the rest of my text is understandable. If not just tell me and I will try to find other words!

Solution retenue

The tape is intended to hold the sensor tight against the drive body so it gets good thermal transmission.

The biggest problem is not the tapes material but the adhesive it has. Some breakdown or loose their stickiness so the sensor is not tight or completely fall off.

Akasa ak-tt12-80 Thermal Adhesive Tape - I don't think it's really what you want here. It does have good high heat adhesive though. The tapes material appears to be more of a heat transmissive type Vs heat safe.

I use this & high temp electrical tape on top: Polyimide tape

I do think you still have heat issues here how about running this app: Temperature Gauge Pro make sure you remove any other fan or temp app before running this. Post in your question a screenshot so we can see whats up.

Update (09/29/2015)

Looks like your graphics card is getting warm. You may want to clean the heat sink fins and the fans go get better cooling. If things look clean then you may need to clean and reapply a fresh coat of thermal paste on the heat sinks (I would do both the CPU & GPU).

At least the HD is not running too hot.

So the thermal conductivity of the tape won't be a problem but the adhesive strength is? When I attached the sensor to the HDD the bonding seemed to be very strong. But anyway, is there a way to find out if the sensor fall off? e.g. via the app you mentioned: if the sensor is telling me a wrong temperature, I could assume that the sensor fell off?

I am not at home at the moment, so I can't post a screenshot of the App, but I will do it as soon as possible.

If the sensor fell off the temp would be lower not higher. So I don't think thats the problem.
