SSD in optical drive of 2010 iMac not recognized

The optical drive in my iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2010, EMC 2389) hasn't been working, so I decided to replace it with an SSD. I got a good deal on the Crucial MX200 500GB, and installed it using the excellent instructions here at iFixit. After I reassembled the iMac, I turned it back on, and it booted from the original HD.

But there is no sign of the SSD, not even in Disk Utility. I took the SSD out and put it in an external enclosure connected through USB, and I can see it - so the SSD is ok, and I formatted it. But it is still not visible in the iMac.

Any suggestions what could be going on? A broken SATA cable that was connected to the optical drive - maybe that's why the Superdrive wasn't working? Can I replace that?

If the caddy is fault, can I replace it with a cable and mount the SSD with double sided tape, what cable do I need ?

Maybe SATA III doesn't work in the optical drive in my iMac?

Sadly, the Crucial MX200 drive is a fixed SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) drive, your system has a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) interface. Unless the drive can be altered to match the systems SATA speed this drive won't work. The direction of compatibility is a slower drive can play in a faster I/O'ed system but not the other way around unless! It has auto sense technology. The spec sheet is your clue, it needs to state it plays across multiple SATA specs (SATA I, II or III).

As to why your optical drive died it could be a bad drive or cable without doing deeper diagnostics one can't say for sure.

Well that explains it. I will return the MX200 and find one that is compatible with my iMac. Alternatively I could keep it in the external enclosure, but then it won't be as fast.

Hmm, the Crucial website says that it is compatible: http://bit.ly/1LYqOvo

Never mind, I guess it is only compatible when installed in the HD location, but not in the optical drive location.

The Crucial website listing is in error. I spoke with them at length a week ago. They stated the drive was a fixed SATA III so it just can't work here. Both the hard drive & optical drive ports are both the same: SATA II (3.0 Gb/s).

Thank you for the update - I'm returning the Crucial and will get at a Samsung EVO instead.
