Blank screen of death

My macbook was running slow last night geting the rainbow wheel alot. I restarted it this morning and now it turns on only to a blank white screen no apple symbol just makes the start up sound and thats it!! I just replaced the harddrive about 8 months ago when I was getting the question mark folder. So I'm hoping this isn't the hard drive again.

Yes, it could be the hard drive again...sometimes a machine that can't find a boot volume will present a solid white screen as you are seeing.

First, power on the machine while holding down the option key. If you get the option menu, then you know the issue is not with the screen. If you don't get the option menu, you may have a screen issue as Mayer suggests, but I bet you will.

If you do get the option menu, try booting up with your reinstall media, and install the OS over the top of the old one (without deleting the current volume) by choosing all the default selections. If the problem is that the operating system has become corrupted, this will replace all the necessary files, and hopefully you'll be able to boot again when it's done. If the hard drive is not visible when it asks where you want to install the OS, pull down the menu from the top and select Disk Utility, and see if it is visible there. If it is, you can format it, and proceed to install a fresh copy of the OS. If it isn't visible in Disk Utility, it likely has gone bad. At that point, I'd pull your hard drive out and re-seat it, just to see if that makes a difference, as sometimes they can come slightly loose.

Try hooking it up to an external monitor. If the problem persists it may be covered by Apple under the Nvidia GPU issue. If you shine a flashlight on the screen and can see the desktop, then the inverter has gone bad. Let us know what you find and we can proceed.

Hello,

I have slightly the same problem with an old MacBook Core Duo:

Yesterday I inserted a DVD, the Mac could not find it so I tried to eject the disc. Because nothing happened, I held down the power button for several seconds to restart the computer while holding down the eject key. Nothing happened at all and since then I just have a white screen when trying to boot.

Holding down the button of the trackpad while starting the computer does not work either.

I'm not sure it's the HD because I don't hear any strange noise from from it.

What I've tried so far:

- waiting for several hours to see if it starts veerrryyyy sloooowwwlyyy

- holding down the eject / mouse-button while starting

- holding down "T" for target mode while starting

- holding down "alt" while starting

- I took out the RAM & the HD and put it back in

Edit: Also tried this...

1. Remove the power supply and the battery

2. Hold the power button for 10 secs

3. Put the battery back in, and the power supply as well

4. Power on while holding : Apple+Function+P+L keys all together …

&

- press CMD+S while starting

- press CMD+v while starting
