White screen apple logo cannot get to desk top

By mistake I chose to change the start-up disk, my mac was working great no issues at all until I decided to re-start it, well now it cannot restart I cannot get to the desk top, I have the white screen with the apple logo and status bar that doesn't load. after a while the status bar goes away and I get a circle, then nothing but the white screen and apple.

I am using a windows key board, but command R doesn't do anything thing. I was able to get to show me a picture of a drive to start it with but this is the main hard drive and I think it has a problem. It's a huge computer no longer under apple care and I would have great difficulty bringing it in. Can someone help me restore to the other start up drive until I can it repaired I am in tears I love this MAC. I hope is not dead.

Get a Snow Leopard retail DVD. Apple may still sell them for $19.95 plus tax and shipping. If not get one off eBay. Boot from it holding down the C key and run disk utilities. GET am external backup hard drive and put a system on it and use it for Time Machine backup also. Hard drives fail - often.

If hard drives didn't fail I'd be out of a job - I'm eating very well every day

Hold the option key on bootup and it will give you a list of your startup devices, select the device it was set to before you changed it. On a windows keyboard I believe "alt" maps to "option". Also if this doesn't help please let us know what version of Mac OSX you were on as well.

It only shows my MacintoshHD and this is the problem no other options and I don't know what version I bought it december 2010. I don't have the recovery disks either due to a move where I lost a lot of stuff. I would like to get to a recovery menu, I am not a tech person this always worked without a hitch. thanks for you help:)
