Transplanted HDD not recognised by Disk Utility

I am fixing my friends mac by installing my old HDD from my dead mac. I replaced his dead drive with mine and I started up. The infamous question mark came up and i opend OS X Utilities. When i entered. I could only find so-called disk0 (I think this is internal) but not my HDD from my old mac. I know the HDD functions as my PC recognised it when i hooked it up. What should I do?

Is the Mac a different model?

Yes. It came from a 2011 macbook pro but other than that, no.

If you put your HD internally, it maybe your friends drive is OK but instead the SATA cable is bad. This series had issues with the SATA cable.

I would start off by replacing it. To prove this you could use an external USB to SATA adapter to put either your friends HD or yours onto a working system, or if you have another means to boot up your friends Mac.

Thank you. I replaced it with the one from my old one and it functions now. Now i'll tell him he can use his old drive and that he might have been scammed. Thank you for making this cheap for my friend.
