Our Canon MP530 printer is having trouble

The printer keeps saying to load paper but there is paper and we have reloaded it a couple of times to make sure. When I open the "hood" to check the ink, the cartridge slider doesn't move out automatically, so I am figuring that the problem is with that piece and not the paper. Any easy fixes for this? Would rather not spend much $ to repair.
