trying to get itunes on the iPod

I just did a hard restart on an ipod and when I go to download itunes it comes up with a message stating current software not up to date but when I go to settings it shows that the updates are current at 6.1.1 but it appears itunes needs 7.5. Has anyone else run into this problem?
