Why are portions of my digitizer periodically unresponsive?

I replaced the digitizer today. After charging the iPad (it had previously been dead) I wanted to see if I had installed it properly. When I attempted to unlock the iPad I noticed that only one or two numbers actually pressed when I tapped them. At first I thought I did something wrong but after turning off the unit and turning it back on everything was working fine, there were no noticeable dead spots and I could easily log in and use the iPad.

After leaving the unit plugged in to charge more I grabbed it to test it again and noticed the exact same issue. The digitizer was unresponsive in most parts and I could not unlock the iPad so I turned off the unit and then turned it back on and then yet again everything seemed to be working. Does anyone know the issue here?

Have you noticed that the screen moves or 'ghost touches' by itself without you touching it? It's possible that you simply received a defective part.

If you do experience ghost touches, try opening up the iPad again and placing Kapton tape along the edges of the digitizer (over the edge of the touch area, directly outside of the view from the other side of the glass; not the glass itself).

Also, if it wasn't done during the initial repair, be sure to tape off the home button soldered connections as well. If these contacts come into contact with other parts of the iPad, it can also cause touch malfunctions.
