Mouse Pad - Mouse keys "Swollen"

My laptop works fine, except that the mouse pad/keys have partially popped up, and are not flat as they should be. I was told that this is an indication that the motherboard is "faulty" and even though the computer still functions, it can go anytime?? Please let me know if you have had any experience with this condition, and what the remedy may be. Thank you.
