iPod wont boot past Apple logo after screen replacement

Replaced a cracked screen on 5th gen ipod touch. Before putting it all back together I tested the screen and the front facing camera was a little weird, so I check the cables and tested it again.

Now it boots with the Apple for 45 seconds and then shuts off.

Home button didnt seem to be working since I couldnt hard restart it at all.

Finally was able to get it into recovery mode but it says it wont upgrade.

Have tried to restore it yet as I'm fixing it for someone else and dont know how much they have it backed up or what not.

Anyway, just want to know if anyone has any suggestions for what to try next?

Since it gets into recovery mode, does that mean its not totally broken?
