Why does sound come through the speakers but nothing through earbuds?

The speakers work great on this laptop. When I plug in a pair of earbuds, the computer setects them. At least they show up in devices and printers. However, when I try playing something through them, the sound just comes through the laptop speakers and nothing comes through the earbuds. Its not just music either. Not even OS sounds will play through the earbuds. Is it a driver problem or a hardware problem? What should I do?

Hi,

Have you tried another pair of headphones to verify that it is not the earbuds' plug that is faulty? If so and it still doesn't work properly, then it seems as if your headphone socket is faulty. Here is a link to the service manual for a HP Envy Touchsmart M6.

Scroll to p.42 for a description on how to replace the USB/Audio board. It also gives the appropriate HP part number for the board (depending on whether you have an AMD or Intel model).
