How to clean 8-way controller?

Down-direction of the 8-way controller in my 6D does not work anymore. It's behaviour has been degrading slowly so the problem could be some kind of dirt between the contacts. Is there a way to clean it without opening whole back cover? If the back cover has to be opened using the guides here is there a way to actually access the contacts of the 8-way controller and still be able to put everything back together?

Disassembly may not be necessary (and cleaning may work):

We were about to follow the disassembly procedure but - having seen the picture - decided to first try to simply pry off just the controller cap.

That worked nicely (the hooks are placed diagonally, the cap is rotated in the image)

exposing the contacts:

In my case there was little corrosion but the two malfunctioning contacts would only work sporadically when pressed directly (leaving it in the camera allowed for easy checking). Pressing the contacts repeatedly seems to improve their response, however, after putting the cap back on the old behaviour returned - non-function.

On a second attempt a minute amount of contact spray was applied to each of the contact plates and again the contacts were pressed a couple of times to “massage it in”. This time it worked and the controller seems to have regained its function on all contacts after refitting.

The contact spray may have been the crucial difference to the previously discussed attempts.

I hope it stays that way for a while … and that this simple procedure may help others

Thanks - this seems to have fixed mine. The camera got drenched in a heavy rainstorm and the lingering problem was with the down and right buttons on the quick control. Removing the cover and cleaning carefully with a little screen-cleaning fluid returned these buttons to operation.

I pried off the controller cap and it looked similar to the picture, but the metal contacts were under a rubber cover that had holes for the controller cap's 4 plastic 'prods'. Holding the rubber part up, I wiped contact cleaner on the four metal contacts and restored function to the up, right and down contacts, but not the left one. What's more, I don't understand how these four contacts work

oh, guess it looks different because my camera is a 60d, not a 6d.

Thank you so much for this, I popped off the switch like you said and cleaned it with alcohol and it came back to life. HOLY COW I OWE YOU ONE!! THANK YOU SO SO MUCH!!

Man, was that helpful. I watched a 20 minute video about how you take the camera apart to fix this problem. This took 30 seconds and worked like a charm.

If you follow this guide, you can take off the back panel. From here its relatively easy to access all of the buttons.

You can remove the connection and screw (indicated by red on the above photo) to take out the 8-way controller. The plastic control dpad itself is simply clipped on to the electronics and can be removed by gently pulling back the clips (I used a very small flathead screwdriver).

As you can see underneath was quite dirty, and cleaning it has helped somewhat but not completely. I will need to source a new 8-way controller despite the cleaning! :(

Here is the controller for $12 on eBay. I'm ordering one for my camera, I'll update when I get it.

The flex component should work well.

Unfortunately, the previously suggested 60D 8-way controller does not work in the 6D - it is slightly smaller and the ZIF connector at the end is also different.

I'll try ordering the flex component too. Fingers crossed.

Trying to clean the controller didn’t work for me either. It also made the situation worse by damaging the delicate flex cable and making the “set” button non functioning. I also broke one of the small pins at the back of the 4 way button so I had to look for a whole new unit. Fortunately, I could find one from aliexpress. I replaced the part and now everything is ok. The feel on the set button is not very good though. But it is way better than a non functioning button. I bought the whole unit for 26 dollars but if you haven’t damaged your plastic button part you can find the flex cable alone for much cheaper. Here is my order: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/For-Cano...

I really appreciate this topic and I thank the author and every contributer who saved me from paying hundred dollars to Canon service here in my country. Great job dudes!

After cleaning the controller contacts the problems on mine got worse, beforehand only the up and down select keys would work, now all directions don't work. Oh well, I ordered the same controller as heavyweightdefender ordered so hopefully that it'll fix my problem. Until then I'll just have to make do with my scroll wheels. Also, it would be nice if you added tweezers do the tutorial Ben Haymen, luckily I had some - they are definitely necessary for putting the controller clip back together. Thanks otherwise though! Great visual aid.

I don't have any pictures, however I was also experiencing the above problem with one of the buttons on the 8 way multi-controller (right directional in my case, only worked if pressed very hard), and went ahead with the flex cable replacement from eBay (this item) after cleaning did not work.

I used the linked Rear Body Panel Replacement guide to get to the flex cable, then proceeded from there to replace the ribbon. Replacing it requires separating the existing cable from the button plastics, then an additional metal backing plate that the ribbon itself is adhered to. After the remaining adhesive is removed you re-stick the metal plate to the ribbon, then go ahead and do everything in reverse (pre-installed adhesive on the replacement ribbon is very handy).

Worked brilliantly & I now have a fully functional multi-controller for only the cost of the replacement ribbon.

I pried off the controller cap gently with a needle. Once out, I used alcohol isopropyl dabbed a Q-Tip and scrubbed each contacts then I used air spray cans to blow the alcohol inside or around the contacts. I repeatedly using my wet swab, by pushing in and out the contacts and apply more air on the contacts until you see bubbles forming around them. The trick is to withdraw all moisture out of the contacts.

Gilles.

Day 2, after completing the steps above, the controller went back to its one way only. Go south. The north, east and west buttons stopped again working after an hour of usage. Ordered a brand new controller from AliExpress as it seems they are the only place in this world who sells that part.

Cheers.
