Operating system won't load because only 395MB available disk space

The problem is easy top identify, fixing it however, not so much. Hence my post. Final Cut Pro likes to use up all my existing operating disk space (yellow other bar) in the background on my limited space SSD Operating System rather then use up the dedicated 750GB HDD i have specifically set aside for all my video editing work.

Back-story aside, when this happened in the past I simply pressed and held ALT while simultaneously turning my Mac on and then simply selected the reboot disk drive symbol on the white backdrop and then proceeded to clear FCPro X caches where necessary in order to get my yellow bar of disk space back, so I can then start and/or finish existing projects.

Unfortunately, the MAC is not allowing me this option any-more for some reason. It simply restarts the same Dos Mode with 'unable to load' in that cream coloured text offset by that old school black DOS MODE backdrop.

Finally I am currently typing this post from my Windows partition thankfully but I still have No clue how to fix this, anybody experience this or am I the only one?

First it would help to know exactly which machine you have. Next what SSD are you running as the primary boot drive and how big is it? How much space does the windows partition take and how often is it used? What operating systems are you running? How much RAM do you have?

Can I actually fix and upgrade my post G5 (2007) Mac Pro?

First i would like to say thank you for your response. The full specifications are above and further answers to your questions are below:

1.) Functioning Ram is currently between 16 and 22 GB, hard to tell performance and hardware wise exactly. The stock RAM is pretty beat up by the looks of things & final cut seems to run better on my 16gb macbook. Anyway before the crash 22GB was shown on the about this mac tab.

2.) The OS was 10.6, the maximum OS I am told it xan run is 10.7 apparently?

3.) Primary SSD was a 75-25% split on the sandisk 128GB, rookie mistake I now am aware of thankfully.

I think that covers all the bases?

Sadly you really need a bigger SSD to really make this sing when doing video editing. I would encourage you to get a 1 TB if you can.

You also have a second problem as OS versions you can use on this system don't natively offer TRIM services as such you'll need this: TRIM Enabler

OK, heres what you'll need to do to try to get your current SSD to work:

First I would clean out the cache & log files your system keeps. The easiest way here is to us an app like this one: Disk Doctor I'm not sure if this will work under your older OS so do check first or find a different app that does the same.

I would then make a full backup of your drive (wll the partitions you have stuff on) as you'll need to wipe it down to re-install the OS after getting rid of the extra partition you created. But, before you wipe the drive make sure you have a bootable drive CD, USB or FireWire (your best option here) with the OS installer present. For now lets stay with what you are running now (10.6.x).

After wiping down your SSD drive reformat it with a single partition using Disk Utility from your external bootable drive GUID & Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Now run the OS installer to install a fresh copy of your OS. At the end of the install process you'll be asked if you need to migrate any files over. You'll need to run the Migration Assistant twice here once to copy the apps back to your SSD (as few as really needed) as well as the user accounts. Hold off on migrating any user files. Once you've completed the OS, Apps & user accounts you should be able to run your system without any issues. Run the Migration Assistant again if you need to move any files over to the 2nd drive and then you're done!

Things I would do here is upgrade your systems memory to the max of 16 GB. As for upgrading the OS Yes, you can go to OS-X Leopard (10.5.8). Just be aware you could encounter issues here depending on the versions of your programs. You might want to try testing the waters using your bootable external drive before upgrading your internal drive.

Good luck!

Make some space on your boot drive by deleting some files on your boot drive. If you have made some space on your boot drive and it still won't boot, it is possible that you over wrote your master boot record (MBR). If this is the case you should be able to restore without formatting your entire disk.

Keep in mind you can install large applications on your 750Gb disk and they should run just fine. Also, you can change where FC caches. Switch this to your extra disk as well.
