SSD doesn't boot properly.

Hello! I have upgraded my friend's MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Late 2012 with a Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD.

The thing is that it doesn't boot properly....sometimes boots and sometimes no...it shows the prohibitory sign....after 2 or 3 reboots it opens...not always...i repaired the disk once again with disk utility and it worked ok for about 10 hours while it's on...but if i reboot agaiiiinnnnnnnn the prohibitory sign...

The thing is that i haven't enabled the TRIM..is it necessary for it to work properly because it's an aftermarket SSD???...i guess no...Also it works perfectly with an HDD drive...no matter how many reboots i do, it is working perfectly...wherever i plug in the SSD...it works until i close it or reboot it or put it into sleep mode...

Please give me your advice!

I'm confused here!! You selected a MacBook Pro Retina as your system, but the Retina models use a custom Apple PCIe blade SSD.

You also state you are using a Samsung 850 EVO SSD. Samsung makes a 2.5" drive and a M.2 drive, neither will work in your Retina system.

So we must be working on a different system here. Please give us the full serial number for the system so we can look it up.

Dan i'm sorry...it's the mid 2012..the last one with an hdd drive...i don't have the serial right now..tomorrow i will..!

I've corrected the model to the 13" Unibody hopefully thats the correct unit.

hey do u solve this by changing the cable? i have the same problem, i changed the cable also but the problem still occur. do i have bad replacement cable?

While I do recommend enabling TRIM services for any 3rd party SSD. Your issues don't involve its setting.

Go into System Prefs and look at what Startup Disk reports as the startup drive. Select your SSD and reboot did that fix it? That should fix the prohibitory symbol problem, as the systems setting was lost.

What is your OS version? Depending on what you have or are planing on upgrading to the most current will dictate which method will be needed to enable TRIM.

The issue you are now facing here is two fold:

The SATA speed of the drive and what the system was designed to support
The SATA cable often needs to be upgraded or is damaged

So, the first thing here is to make sure the systems firmware is up to date. From an external bootable drive follow this Apple T/N: About EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Mac computers. Make sure you are at the level listed or newer. Don't try doing this from your internal SSD drive! You could corrupt it.

The next thing here is the original Apple HD was likely a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) drive. Now you are attempting to put in a fixed SATA (6.0 Gb/s) drive. Sadly, you can't do this until you upgrade the SATA drive cable as the older cable can't support the higher data rate. Make sure you install the correct rev cable. Dan i did it..the ssd is already selected for booting up...The thing is now that i can't enable trim..it says about operation failed error 1...

You still have an underlying hardware issue which needs to be addressed before you can enable TRIM.

thanks for all Dan! i appreciate it a lot...i do have the latest boot rom and smc version....so the only solution seems to be the cable..hope it works!!

Sounds like your Hard Drive Cable is in trouble. Your part number is probably 821-2049-A. That should do the trick.

PS...You'll have to reinstall the OS once the cable is installed.

And why does it work with an hdd without a problem???...if it is the cable then the hdd will not work either..right?

Problems with the specific 2012 cables do not areally ppear until they are under high stress or high demand. Hard drives are not really capable of taxing the cable to the point of exertion. Solid-state drives are capable of that.

Upgrade Efi, upgrade SSD HD bios also, Boot from a live Usb.

If not perform a Reset with Keyboard combi.
