Is the infamous "clicking" noise while recording related to hardware?

A faint, subtle clicking noise occurs when recording a video or voice recording with wi-fi ON. When wi-fi is turned OFF, the clicking noise disappears. Is this a hardware issue? Maybe something to do with the positioning of the hardware?

The microphone and wifi antenna are both at the top of the iPod Touch, but on opposite sides.
