Salt water damage on go pro hero 4

I jumped off a more or less 20 ft diving board with my go pro on my hand. My landing was really bad and the go pro hit my head and hand really hard that's why the waterproof case opened and salt water came inside the camera. I took out the battery and the sd card and let it dry but i forgot to rinse it with fresh water. What will happen to my camera if it wasn't rinsed with fresh water?

Shem Pepito I recognize this is an old question but because of the "interesting" answers I feel obliged to clear up some misconceptions. Rice does not work

Anytime you have any electronic device that gets submerged or immersed in any water, you have to clean it properly. The first thing is to not use the device, not turning it on or trying to charge it, to sync it or whatever else could supply power to the components. Remove the battery Then disassemble the device and clean each and every part with some high grade (90%+) isopropyl alcohol and a soft brush. This means every part, every connector etc. Rinse it a couple of times with the alcohol. It is okay to submerge parts in an alcohol bath. If there is gross contamination, use sterile water (not tap water) to clean that contamination of and then proceed with the alcohol. It is not necessarry to use any kind of air device to dry the board. Alcohol in a high concentration will evaporate quickly.

Once all the components are properly cleaned, it is vital that the battery gets replaced as well. Any battery that was exposed, will ultimately fail. After all that, reassemble the device (in your case the GoPro) and then evalaute for any issues. Until the device is cleaned you cannot do a proper trouble shooting.

Here are some good guides on how to clean things. This particular guide was written for an iphone but all the points apply to pretty much any device. Here is our greneral guide.

Even with all the meticulous cleaning there is still a high chance that the device will have some kind of issues. This is due to the fact that virtually any part can fail because of corrosion and shortcircuits. The better the cleaning, the greater the chance on fixing it. Ultrasonic cleaning would of course be optimal.

If you submerged your device and have nothing handy to work on it or cannot get to any tools etc., place the device in a plastic bag in clean water and place it in a fridge or other cool area. This will slow down the corrosion process until you can get the tools etc. to repair it.

@joiboi I did not see your answer on here. Must have missed it. The reason why I feel obliged is because of the misinformation that was posted. Rice is definitely not an answer. That is not an opinion but a fact that has been proven over and over. Just because a question has been answered, does not mean that there is not a different answer. You may need to consider those possibilities. "butting in" is not the correct term you should use for this.

@joiboi YOU have not EARNED the right to criticize anyone!

Salt water is very corrosive and it is likely done it's damage. Was there any warranty on the water proof case and is it out of date. It still might be good even though it was hit hard.

I close badly the water proof case and dived (scuba) about 4-5 meters deep in the sea for about 30 minutes. The camera was completely flooded (was a Hero 3 Black). When return home I rinse it with fresh water and then dry it completely well and put it to the sun first for about one hour; then the best to any electronic device that suffer this kind of flooded is to put inside a kilogram of dry rice and all of this must be inside a taper ware completely close. I leave the camera for about one month inside the rice and can change the rice with new fresh dry rice if you can at the middle of the process. After that process for remove moisture my camera could take pictures and video normally. Some time later the camera began to show some problems to put it ON and OFF so was not so trustworthy and bought another Go Pro Hero 4 Silver, and leave for one year in a box the Hero 3 Black. Finally after a year I try to turn on the Hero 3 and all was correct and could use it with out problems, but only a few times don´t respond to turn on or off, so I decided to open the camera to see what was happening. I disassemble all the parts includind the lens and the sensor and wash the cards and contacts with Bencine and soft teeth brush very well. I found little salt cristals in some parts of the tarjets, the lens, the sensor and specially in one contact tape that was the cause of the error for turn on or off. Reassemble all the parts and now the camera is in perfect funtion. The battery (go pro) that was in use when the flooded occurs is completely inflated so is discarded but I had two more so was not so much problem. Hope is useful my experience. Good Luck

@pacudamus the reason why it failed is because you did not clean it properly. Rice does absolutely nothing and has no place in repairs. "IT IS A BAD CHOICE ALL AROUND" as you found out.
