Why does nothing appear on desktop?

I am reposting my question from Apple Discussions to see if someone here may have a little more insight into the problem. Here is the thread:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa...

To update.... applications will no longer open. Just my desktop photo with nothing but the dock appears. The fans will occasionally come on full tilt and run for awhile that way and eventually slow down. Back when Temperature Monitor still functioned I was getting some pretty high temp readings, in excess of 75 degrees C. Just this morning I tried to run TechTool 3.1.3 from my iBook (target disk mode). the iMac's HD mounted on the iBook's desktop but TechTool was unable to detect the volume.

At this point, I have the back cover off of the iMac and am looking at the capacitors. Some of them look a little puffy around the crosses compared to the rest. I'm wondering if it would be worth the cost to replace the caps?

I am grateful to anyone who is willing to take the time to read and give me some input on this issue.

Thankfully,

Randy

Thanks for the reply. I'll check out the link you posted. I'm actually considering doing the repair myself with this information,

I think it was you who posted this in another question. I take it from your reply that you're pretty sure my problem is the caps.

It does seem like Apple should own up to this mistake and continue the repair extension. There are so many of us with those iMac G5s out there. Is it only a matter of time before they are all effected by the bad caps?

Here is a list of the bad cap serial numbers that Apple identified:

Serial Number ranges:

W8435xxxxxx - W8522xxxxxx

QP435xxxxxx - QP522xxxxxx

CK435xxxxxx - CK522xxxxxx

YD435xxxxxx - YD522xxxxxx

I now have three iMac G5 logic boards in a box to send off for capacitor repair and another four waiting. I've seen this problem for a long time and I'm very disappointed with Corporate Apple for not continuing their recall program on this blatant insult to the Mac community. SHAME ON YOU STEVE JOBS (you sold a piece of junk with faulty capacitors, you should warranty this product for the next twenty years). You brought shame to me and the entire Mac community for not handling this in a professional manner. Congratulations on your stock now having greater value than MicroSoft. To bad you had to become a thief to do it. You stole from people that trusted and respected you and your reputation. Now you're just another greedy corporate SOB instead of the great man you should be.

I have not used this person for repairs yet but he seems to know the problem and have reasonably priced solutions. Here's the link I found. I'll let you know my results.

I think I may have given you the wrong link, I'll check it out. I don't know if all the G5s have the potentially defective caps.

Thanks. I'm pretty sure, from all of the information I've read (for years) that my 20" 1.8ghz iMac is one of the cap problem Macs. If you find out otherwise, let me know.

I really appreciate your help.
