Track pad and Keyboard stopped working except power button

A few days ago my keyboard and trackpad stop responding. I brought it to the Apple store but the guy said my fan was broken but when I tested it at home it worked fine. Any theory's on whats wrong or fixes. I haven't opened it myself because I don't have the tools so I don't have pictures. sorry

mmm ... I'm surprised the Apple Genius told you is was the fan. To be sure I would recommend running this App (full version): TG Pro. Post a screenshot of what it shows you so we can be sure.

Given your symptoms, my guess is your battery is swelled up causing pressure on the backside of the trackpad & keyboard. I would recommend you run this App: CoconutBattery. Again, post a screenshot of the main screen so we can see what it tells us.

TG Pro can also help us isolate the problem down to the battery as it will report a higher than normal temp while charging.

Update (05/22/2016)

OK, let your system run a bit longer on battery so the battery is lower. Then, plug in the MagSafe adapter so you can charge the battery up.

Take another snapshot of coconutBattery at this point so we can see how low the battery is and the temp as it starts to charge VERY IMPORTANT: Leave the coconutBattery window open so you can see it (don't cover it up)

As your system is charging type on your keyboard and use your trackpad as soon as it stops working take note of the batteries temp. Unplug the charger and let the system cool as best as you can see if the system is able to recover in 1/2hr increments. When it does take another snapshot of CoconutBattery and tell us the temp you noted when your keyboard & Trackpad stopped working.

If you have an external keyboard you could plug it in or Bluetooth, so you can capture the point your builtin keyboard stopped working.

Dan's Answer to a similar problem in 2014: Give him credit if it works.

The keyboard/track pad ribbon cable from the top case is not seated correctly into the logic board connector (or damaged).

Something was spilled into the keyboard and it took a bit of time to damage the connections.

The last possibility is the battery has swelled pressing from under the keyboard causing it to fail.

To test for the battery problem, put your laptop into a plastic bag making sure to pull out as much air out as you can. Place the laptop into your refrigerator for about an 2 hours to drop its temp. Take it out and quickly turn it on, see if the keyboard and track pad are working. If they are the issue is the battery pressing on the top case from below.

If your upto it pop off the bottom cover to inspect the ribbon cable to see if its correctly seated. Otherwise you'll likely need a new top case as the keyboard is part of it.
