I keep seeing stuff stressing to make sure and order the same brand hard dive for this year. How can I locate this information before I pull it apart... Computer will not respond to operations either.

Yes! Before you needed to use the same brand drive (i.e. Western Digital to Western Digital) now that OWC has this adapter you can choose any drive! HD, SSHD or even a SSD!

The only rub here is the drives SATA speed! You need to get a drive that will work in a SATA II (3.0) system.

Some drives have a fixed SATA speed like SATA III (6.0) which won't work in your system. Other's have the ability to sense the systems SATA port speed and can adjust to it. As an example a very good drive here would be a hybrid SSHD drive like: Seagate Desktop SSHD. If we look at its spec sheet: Seagate SSHD spec sheet we can see the line: SATA Transfer Rates Supported (Gb/s) lists all three SATA speeds, this is what you want to look for, for the drive you do get. You want your systems SATA speed listed.

If you go with a SSD drive you'll need to get an adapter frame if you replace your HD with it. Frankly, I would go with the SSHD as its more cost effective given the age of your system.

iFixit has a guide for replacing the HDD in this particular model, and they also sell the correct HDD for it as well. The guide also has links to replacement HDDs for this iMac as well. You can find the guide here.

You can find the 1TB HDD sold by iFixit here.

Depending on the drive your system has you may need a replacement thermal sensor cable. You may need this: OWC In-line Digital Thermal Sensor for iMac 2009-2010 Hard Drive Upgrade with it you can use any 3.5" SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) replacement drive.

Dan you're saying any hard drive brand will do as long as I attach the Digital Thermal Sensor?

I've never done an iMac storage upgrade before, but I do know about the Digital Thermal Sensor. Ultimately the Hard Drive brand doesn't matter, as long as the specs are correct and you have the thermal sensor. (RPM, Case Size, and etc.) Apart from the Thermal Sensor and case size of the HDD, there isn't anything hardware-wise that can prevent you from using one brand of 3.5in HDD over another brand. The Thermal Sensor is vital, as it controls the speed for the fan keeping the HDD cool. As long as its installed, you shouldn't have any trouble.
