The charger that came with the device originally was lost in transition to my new apartment so I bought a new charger from Amazon. The new charger is an off brand just to save a few bucks. The problem now is that I am no longer able to use my device and charge it at the same time. What recommendations do you have for me?

Ryan I would look into spending the extra money and buying a Nintendo charger. Some of the generic chargers will only charge while in sleep mode. I have a feeling this is what is causing you the issues. Let me know if this solved your problem.
