Why won't my unit charge?

Suddenly my ipad air 2 stopped recognizing any lightning plug. It has gone to zero power & shut off. It was one year and one week past the purchase. Of course, Apple wants to just replace my unit using my Applecare +. Though, there are a few videos that are priceless that I recently took that were not backed up. What are my options? Ideally I would like to keep my unit & repair it. If I turn my unit back into Apple & receive a replacement, I'm very concerned that my sensitive personal data is not secure. What are the guarantees that Apple will wipe the unit? Any help is appreciated.

Solution retenue

1. Apple wont wipe the unit. (at least not instore)

2. Apple will not transfer your data.

3. If you are going to repair the ipad air 2 yourself, be very careful as the screen is bonded to the lcd, making the chance of cracking it quite high.

Possible problems

1. Lint in the charge port. (clean out the port)

2. Damaged charge port (change the port)

3. Internal board damage(repair problems on the board)

If you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself, take it to you closest independent repair shop that does microsoldering as only those stores will solve the third problem for you

Thanks packinit! I'm definitely only qualified to perform #1 myself if the unit has any hope of working again. Lol.

If the unit is dead, can it even be wiped? Am I being unnecessarily paranoid to be concerned about turning my unit in with all my 'stuff' on it?

I was told by the Apple people that the internal board/charge port etc. isn't repairable because everything is soldered on. Obviously they thought I'd believe it & could tell I was clueless...though, I'd never throw in the towel & surrender the iPad Air 2 without looking into all my options.

From what you know, stuff can be 'fixed' by someone who is experienced-right? I apologize if I'm repeating myself...Thanks in advance!

Hey, I cleaned out the charge port using the soft, flexible dental brushes. There was no visible dust ir lint, though IT DID ACCEPT POWER when I plugged in the cord! That said, it's acting odd-going from the battery icon w/a thin red line at the bottom of the icon, to a white screen w/the Apple on it, to a black screen. The charge is going very slow. I came across another forum where a ton of people have been having similar issues. They also had several tips to resolve the prob. Am going to sleep now with hopes of waking to a fully finctionong iPad.

Try a different charging cable that you know works on another device.

Thx for the response, Um, Jim Brennan, of course. My first sentence says it wouldn't recognize ANY lightening plug. Hey, I cleaned out the charge port using the soft, flexible dental brushes. @nancy , No you aren't repeating yourself, and yes its definitely something that can be fixed. All you need to do is find a repair shop that does micro soldering and they should be able to fix it for you. If they say they can't then try another.

It's something we deal with all the time, but we are based in Australia so it's probably not that economical for you to send it to us

Here is an article from another technology website that's worked for me in the past. It describes cleaning the port carefully.
