Won't allow a reinstall of OS

Model A1095: My powerbook runs ok, but very slowly. It will not boot up from the Leopard CD, nor will it Rebuild with the latest version of Disk Warrior. Also will not let me fix Disk Permissions in Disk Utility. I have already reset PRAM, PMU, does start-up in Safe Boot mode. Not sure what is wrong with it. When booted up from DVD all I get is an Apple logo, then a blue screen, then a dark gary screen where it hangs. Anyone have ideas?

What does Disk Warrior do when it fails? It should give you some indication of why, like "Disk malfunction" or other message. It does sound to me like you're having disk issues.

Is there any possibility that you're trying to boot it with the wrong startup DVD?

Download SMART Utility from versiontracker.com and have it test your hard drive (it reads the SMART attributes directly, and will alert you to a drive that is Failing, unlike Disk Utility or the "check SMART status" in Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro.) You can use SU in demo mode for free for a limited time.

Try booting into single user mode, hold "Option" And "S" right after it chimes, and type "fsck -y" that basicly checks all of the disks, and checks for any problems. You could also do this with the leopard disk inserted, or you may have a bad optical drive.

FWIW, a Safe Boot does perform fsck.

What happens during the rebuild is it hangs about halfway through. SU shows the disk as being good.

If Disk Warrior hangs, there may be clues in the system log of the system you were booted to when running DW. Of course there won't be a log if you were booted to the DW CD. Can you install DW on an external drive and try again?

I still think you have a bad hard drive there, especially considering its age (assuming it's the stock drive). Is there another one you can install to see if it works?

One reason could be that your drive is simply worn down.

5 years of use, is more than i'd expect from a harddrive.

Will a timeMachine backup fully succeed?

Can you install onto a external firewire drive? If not, then it might be your optical drive stuck halfway... But I think the reason your machine is slow is a combination of clutter in your system and an old drive (error correction does tax the speed).

Just my 2 cents.

BTW if you didn't max the ram, you can't expect it to be snappy. A G4 is an ancient machine imho: come march and you should go buy a new one.

This is a problem of hdd or dvd . First boot form external DVD rom. and check i hope it work. Some cases hdd fail change to new one. rare cases you need to clean the board of G4.
