Not draining at the end of of the cycle

Dishwasher that is less than two years old does not drain at the end of the cycle. You can press the drain/cancel button and it will drain 50% of the time. I can hear the motor or pump running. We already replaced the control board, that was not the solution. No lines were clogged and the dishwasher does not run through the garbage disposal.

I think I have the same problem you did. Did you figure it out?

Solution retenue

Why is it not plumbed via the disposal?

Cause 1

Drain Pump

The drain pump uses an impeller to force water through the drain hose. If the drain pump motor is not working, the dishwasher won’t drain. To determine if the drain pump is defective, check the pump motor for continuity using a multimeter. If the motor does not have continuity, or if is getting power but won’t run, replace the drain pump. Drain pumps are not repairable—if the drain pump is defective, you must replace it.

Cause 2

Drain Impeller

The drain impeller pushes water through the drain hose and into the garbage disposer or drain line. If the impeller is broken, replace it.

Cause 3

Drain Solenoid Kit

The drain solenoid opens the drain valve to allow the water to exit the dishwasher. If the drain solenoid fails the valve will not open causing the dishwasher not to drain.

Can you still use it like that? Even if water on bottom. Dishes still look clean. I tried cancel/drain but wouldn't drain. Nothing but silence...

I just wanted to add to this for anyone in the future that if you run into a dishwasher not draining and have run through most of the other checks like I have, also check that the wires from the control board to the pump have continuity and visually inspect them along their length. Turns out that after trying literally everything else to fix my KitchenAid KDTM354DSS5 with no luck and lots of head scratching that one of the wires was broken to the drain pump. It looks like it was somehow caught and crimped in the plastic shield and eventually broke the wire. I soldered and heat shrinked it back together and like magic the drain pump works again!

Things to check for a dishwasher that won’t drain:

  1. If there is no sound when you press the drain button then it could be a faulty drain pump.
  2. Check the drain pump for continuity and measure resistance. Make sure it is within spec listed on the Technician diagnostic sheet usually hidden behind the kick panel.
  3. Check that there is power running to the drain pump after pressing the drain button. Careful with live voltage.
  4. Check that the wiring has continuity and visually inspect for breaks or worn jacket.
  5. Make sure there is no clog in the drain line or the flapper valve is not stuck or broken.
  6. If there is a newly installed disposal make sure the drain hose port has the knock out removed.
  7. If the drain pump seems ok, but there is no power to the drain pump and wiring is ok then it could be the control board. You can probe on the board to check for continuity on the drain pump circuit and that the fuse is intact by following the Technician diagnostic sheet instructions.

Oh boy, to me this all sounds like rocket science. I just commented above that I wonder if it's possible that you can still use it like that as the dishes look fairly clean, but then again, as this was the first time using it, it may interfere with the next cycle. If it doesn't drain, then it will use dirty water from the previous cycle. NOT good. This is the second Kenmore dishwasher that I've had trouble with...

Thank you Brody Collins, the info you have listed was very helpful. I need to check my board. Appliance repairman said it was my board due to no power getting to the pump from the board and he did not say anything about a fuse on the board. I need to find the board check the fuse and check solder connections and wiring before I replace a $190 board. Appreciate this sound response you posted. -TK

He also said the boards were back ordered. Anyone have any idea the best place to find a board for the MDB8989SHZ0 Maytag Dishwasher? Thank you. -TK
