Progressively worse, replace parts and upgrade?

I have a Power Mac G4 MDD 867 MHz DP, with a 133 MHz bus speed, that is failing.

The operating system is OSX 10.5.8 Leopard. This is the minimum specs for a computer to run Leopard.

As I have worked through solutions to improve the computers condition, it has actually gotten progressively worse. Please note that I am new at this and some of the replacement parts I have installed along the way may be the wrong ones. I am enjoying learning from my mistakes.

My problem with this computer has gone from hard drives failing, to the date and time failing, to USB ports working intermittently, to firewire ports not working at all, to going into sleep mode shortly after start up, to fans not working, to its current condition, no chime on start up, with a black monitor screen and (2) fans working all the time, the hard drive system fan and the processor fan, and the optical bay system fan working intermittently (helps to push on connection to motherboard).'

The Power Macintosh G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors) models have the Dual processors mounted on a custom 300-pin daughtercard.

The video card is original, NVIDIA GeForce4 MX graphics card with 32 MB of DDR SDRAM.

The original heat sink and processor fan have been replaced with a german VERAX heat sink and fan. This has been in the computer for about 6 years and made it run more quiet.

The computer has the capacity for 2 GB's of Ram, which should be 266 MHz PC2100 DDR SDRAM (2.5v). The RAM in there was (2) 512MB PC2100 and (2) 512MB 2700. I took the (2) PC2700's out of the computer.

The specs on the Hard Drive bays are:

Can officially support four internal hard drives -- two Ultra ATA/100 (ATA-6) and two Ultra ATA/66 (ATA-5) -- drives larger than 128 GB are supported.

The hard drives were (1) in the ATA/100 bay, and the other in the Ultra ATA/66 Bay. They are now now in the ATA/ 100 bay, (1) in slave mode, a 500GB Apple IDE/ATA100 7200RPM, and (1) in master mode, a 120GB Maxtor IDE/ATA133 7200RPM. I don't know what can or can not be put in the Ultra ATA/66 Bay.

I have recently replaced the 3.6V lithium battery with a new one.

I can put back a 867 MHz processor, but if all these parts have to be replaced,

I'D LIKE TO PUT IN A FASTER PROCESSOR IF POSSIBLE, SAY 1.25 GHz.

At this point I am ready to replace the motherboard (logicboard), the processor,the video card. I will most likely do this with used parts from EBAY. I am ALSO willing to replace any other parts if necessary. IS THIS THE CORRECT NEXT STEP?

If I get the computer running again, I will re-install the OSX Leopard as well.

The date and time problem was from a dead PRAM battery. This can also cause your current symptoms. You can install four hard drives. Use the 66 bus for your Time Machine back-up. According to which logic board you have you may be able to bump this to a dual 1.42 stock processors. Replace the PRAM battery and press the CUDA reset button on the logic board. As for diagnostics, I would first disconnect all externals and all internal hard drives and try to boot from the Optical drive.

Does this sound about right what follows?

My current G4 867 MHz MDD DP, with a 133 MHZ bus speed that I plan on replacing:

1A. The current logic board which is an Apple computer 820-1453-A

2A. The Dual MPU 867MHz Processor

3A. RAM PC2100

4A. If necessary (GPU) Graphics Processor Unit 66 MHz 1.5V

The G4 MDD DP with new 1.42 GHz

1A Apple Mac G4 MDD Dual 1.42GHz Motherboard Logic Board

1B. 1.42 GHz stock processor, bus speed is 167 MHz?

1C. RAM PC2700

1d. Graphics AGP ATI Radeon 9000 Pro Mac Edition

No chime

means fails POST (power on self test), black screen sounds like a video problem.

You have so many variables I would trouble shoot it by changing only one thing at a time. If you did this go back to the last thing you changed.
