Has anyone been successful in getting their video card replaced by this program:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203787

My machine was purchased in June 2011. I have never had any issues with it until the video card died. I am past the timeframe of the replacement program, so that's why I was looking at doing it myself. Anyone have success with Apple honoring after the timeframe?

Thanks!

Nothing ventured, nothing lost ;-}

If you can bring your system into an Apple Store to see what they say.

As you noted the program has ended so you'll need to use what ever you can do to entice the service manager you need your system fixed, use your feminine-wiles to the max here. Make sure to schedule mid morning & mid week when the staff is at their best mood. Good Luck!

Mine died yesterday. The genius at the Topanga mall said that there is nothing he can do for me and it will be $490 to fix it.

Ok...first attempt completed. Result: Got the Apple "bing" like it was booting and static noise like TV that is not tuned to a channel. I used your guide to get as far as taking the motherboard and heat sinks out. Took apart the GPU card and heat sink. Cleaned and put fresh thermal paste and compound on. The only thing I could not do was put back in the black foam gasket like piece that surrounds the GPU chip and extends through parts/chips to the edge of the GPU board. The black foam was fragile and seemed to damaged from use and/or heat. It seemed to be used as just a cushion and I could not restick it in place or find a replacement, so I did not put it back on. Could this be my problem?

I've had about five repaired personally with that program and an untold number from this site have used it.

UPDATE

I have had about 70% success reflowing the GPU with a hot air work station.

We don't have a logic board replacement or a GPU card replacement guide. But this guide will get you 90% of the way: Installing iMac Intel 27" EMC 2429 Dual Hard Drive Kit. Once you get the logic board loose (Step 31) finish removing it from the system.

Do make sure to use a ESD mat and proper ESD protection here! The GPU card can now be removed and here are the possible replacement units:

  • AMD Radeon HD 6770 (512 MB of VRAM) - 661-5967
  • AMD Radeon HD 6770 (1 GB of VRAM) - 661-5968
  • AMD Radeon HD 6770 (2 GB of VRAM) - 661-5969

You are fighting two issues:

- Tantalum cap failure on the GPU board due to heat

- GPU chip failure as being pushed beyond its expected use range.

The root cause is related to the applications being used over stretched the GPU's cooling and the GPU its self pushing it beyond its limits.

To prevent failure requires cleaning the dust build up yearly at least. Repasting with a better thermal paste and good thermal pads ever three-four years. But the key issue is using a good thermal monitoring app which can alter the fans. I recommend TG Pro

Once failed its hard to bring back for very long.
