Why can't I encrypt my phone?

I have tried to encrypt my Coolpad many times, but all that happens is the little green Android robot shows up and nothing else. I can minimize and close the screen with the robot and the phone continues to work normally. I always make sure the charger is plugged into the wall instead of my computer's USB and as few apps are running as possible. I have searched Google thoroughly and tried these things with no luck: making sure phone is in landscape mode, killing all but system apps, factory reset without installing anything including Google apps, changing from PIN to password, and some other things I don't recall.

I have read plenty of articles explaining in-depth how to encrypt an Android phone and they pretty much all have very similar instructions, but there are very few e explaining how to encrypt a phone that doesn't want to start the encryption process.

Can anyone help me?

I have followed Kurt's above steps religiously , but the encryption process never starts . I just continue to get the screen with the Android robot. The phone never restarts. I have let the phone sit for 3-4 hours on this screen and nothing happens.

I am running Android 4.4.4 btw

ok uh ok i will find out

Same here its android 4.4.4 im just curious as to whether your guys' coolpad 3300's are also a government sponsored phone or not. Mine is. Im thinking that might be why

I also have a GI smartphone which is a coolpad 3300A. I can confirm that this problem exists. I can't encrypt the phone even after letting the phone sit over night.

How to encrypt Jelly Bean and KitKat devices

Step 1: Plug in your device’s power cable and allow the battery to charge. Keep the power cable connected.

Tip: The encryption process can take as long as 30 minutes or more. If your battery dies and the phone shuts off in the middle of the process, the process will fail, and you’ll lose data.

Step 2: Open the device’s Settings and look for the Security menu item. Then select the Screen Lock menu item and choose a PIN or Password and follow the prompts to confirm it.

Tip: One annoyance with encryption is that you’ll always need to enter a PIN, or the longer password, to open the device. Longer passwords are harder to hack.

Step 3: Scroll to the Encrypt phone or Encrypt tablet option within the Security settings and choose the Encrypt SD card option by checking the checkbox. Select Next and confirm your PIN at the prompts.

Step 4: Press the Encrypt phone or Encrypt tablet button.

Tip: You can’t reverse encryption in Android. If you decide to decrypt your device later, you’ll need to perform a factory reset, which will wipe all data.

Step 5: Just wait awhile. The device will reboot several times during the encryption process, which can take 30 minutes or more. On completion, you’ll be prompted to enter your password, which is your PIN or password, depending on what you’re using. Whatever you do, don’t forget it!
