When it's not plugged in, the wifi connection continuously drops off then reconnects. Over and over again. Each connect/ disconnect cycle is about 10 seconds duration. It works fine when connected to external power(and occasionally it is ok on battery power)

Hi,
Have you checked that you have the latest (appropriate to your OS) WLAN network adapter drivers installed in your tablet?

When it is unstable how far is it away from your wireless router?

Any distance. Even when 2 or 3 feet away from the cell phone wifi hot spot. I get the same problem, when near or far, several different wireless routers. They all work fine on my other computers.
