iTunes error code -1

An old phone form my friends needed restoring as it had a passcode. Everything was working perfectly fine before except it didn't charge, turns out there was a lot of crap in the charging port so when I cleaned it out it charged and worked perfectly

When I went to restore it gets halfway through and returns error -1

i can't seem to find any info about this erorr online

does anybody have any ideas? only thing I can think of is charging port

Charging port sure sounds like a good possibility.

I gave up on using iTunes error codes to diagnose problems. I would believe it if you told me that they are completely random and mean nothing. Start simple: connect a new Lightning port to the board, connect to iTunes and see if it works. Don't worry about taking the old one out or doing anything fancy. Just plug it in. If it works, you are golden. If not, you only lost about 30 seconds.

I tried it still the same unfortunately. It just crashes and stays with the bar there and the apple logo and returns -1, it will only go away if I unplug or restart

guessing it's toast, very annoying as it worked fine beforehand

I suggest attempting a DFU restore if you haven't already.

Has the battery been replaced before?

Well, what do you know...

Took it out of the housing and just had battery and charging port (no screen) didn't work, tried with screen, didn't work...

I thought I'd give it a bath with IPA99. Didn't ultrasonic clean or even remove IMEI shields as I can't at the moment but what do you know it worked and the device is fully restored

No visible signs of water damage

and it's back with the same problem lol

doesnt get calls, just says searching or no service so I restored it again and updated and what do you know itunes error -1... so i did the same thing and cleaned it in a bath of IPA and let it dry and it restored again and signal was great until this morning now it has stopped. any ideas what the actual problem is?

I'm fairly sure this is a baseband chip fault issue as it's intermittently working. I'm not sure whether it needs to be reballed / reflowed or replaced.

You probably see that the IMEI and modem firmware may disappear together in Settings > General > About phone when it gets the searching and no service.

In my opinion it is hardware issue which can be resolved by reflowing the chip (easy version) or more complicated reballing or replacong the chip.

It's a hardware problem as said before. Some have worked to heat around simcard tray with an hairblower for 4-5min

Error -1 could be caused by connection between device and pc, network and hardware problem.

Error -1 is a baseband IC connectivity issue. Reballing the Baseband IC is the best way to fix it.
