Replacement iPhone 4 Display Assembly Parts

Long time follower, first time writer.

So I keep seeing responses to posts about having to purchase the digitizer, frame, glass and LCD as one unit for an iPhone 4. However I only see these responses for questions asked about only replacing one of those items. For example a person has a broken front glass but the digitizer is fine, or they only want to replace the LCD component.

My question is this,

As many of you likely know, eBay has a plethora of offerings for a person to buy the glass, digitizer, frame and LCD units separately. What I am confused about is why I wouldn't be able to purchase all the parts separately to make my own Display Assembly.

No one has really clearly pointed out why you can't combine all the parts yourself to make the assembly.

I understand that the LCD and Digitizer are fused together with the OEM part.

If they need to be fused together, then why? The way I see it, I could buy the frame, glass and digitizer as one unit and the LCD as a separate unit and just slap them together (not fusing them). I am sure I will have issues with dust and debris possibly getting between the front and the LCD, but shouldn't the parts function under this presumption? Isn't this how previous iPhone models worked...?

I look forward to hearing any and all responses to these questions.

Thanks for stopping and reading my post.

Update

To those who might browse this topic.

Alex Jansen and Scott Head wrote back confirming that in theory, using a separately purchased digitizer assembly (glass, frame & digitizer) and an LCD unit should function as expected, in reference to my questions about the front glass, digitizer and LCD components.

So to clarify (for those of you with a similar question),

If you wanted to purchase the iPhone 4 Display Assembly components separately, you could and they should work, how well though is a different story all together.

I have yet to see a concrete write-up or video of someone who has taken this course of action.

If you've got a link you could share, showing a video of someone fully disassembling an iPhone 4 and replacing the front assembly with a non-fused LCD panel (or something close), that would be great.

I have also included a link below to a YouTube video of someone who leads you to believe the LCD unit is separate, but the video skips the part showing the LCD placed in the digitizer.

I'd also like to thank all who have contributed to my topic so far.

Thank you,

The demo assemblies we have been testing to carry in the store have for the most part been missing the ear piece grill like you said, but have had the camera mount. We have since been able to source assemblies with the grill installed.

Theoretically, yes, the LCD and digitizer should both work without being fused together (it would certainly make my life easier).

Thanks for the response, to be clear, you are saying that when you do have Display Assemblies in stock, they include both the ear piece grill and camera mount...?

My only issue is with the pricing of the Display Assemblies across the web (including your site). The price point varies considerably for parts that are almost always after market and very difficult to verify authenticity. I honestly think $100 is a fair asking price, TechRestore makes that offer including the white version.

Trying not to be rude, but how does iFixit justify its price point for its parts...?

The fusing together of the LCD to the digitizer, I would imagine, is in part to help maintain the quality of the retina display. Like you said, it prevents dust from getting in there and possibly makes the integrity of the glass better.

I see one major problem with trying to assembly it with all the separate components. The only way the LCD attaches to the digitizer is by fusing it together. Unlike previous versions of iPhone, there are no screws connecting the LCD the the digitizer. Check out the picture of the panel's backside. I don't see a way to attach the LCD to the digitizer unless you try to glue it yourself along the edges which may or may not be possible. There is a little bit of overlap between the LCD and the digitizer so it might be possible to try and glue it along the overlap so not to make it visible on the LCD. Trying to glue it yourself though would be tricky as there is little room for error before you screw up either the LCD or the digitizer. The other issue is the parts you buy from eBay are often incomplete. For example, you might buy a digitizer and realize that it is missing the earpiece cover. It may get frustrating trying to get all the parts you need.

Long story short, I would probably stay away from trying to assemble the entire thing from scratch.

Thanks for the response.

I've noticed that practically every replacement Display Assembly for the iPhone 4 is missing the ear piece cover (mesh/grill) as well as the front facing camera mount (used to hold the camera in place, you can see it in the zoomed-in view of the pic you linked), unless the replacement part came from an original unit. If you have some links to these parts (the mesh/grill/cover and camera mount) that would be most helpful (in any case).

What I am gathering from what you are saying though, is that functionally, the parts should work regardless if the LCD is fused to the digitizer.

It is highly likely that I will be buying the complete Display Assembly, I'm mostly looking for clarification on this dodgy topic.

Yes I believe they should at least function properly without being fused together.

The machine used to sonic weld the digitizer, to the glass is designed to do the process in a sterile environment, in a certain way, that was engineered to certain specs. to go piece mill a electronic part like this part together just to save $5-$10 bucks is not cheaper. At that moment when you pay 22.00 for the cheap part it feels cheaper over the $32.00 high quality, OEM part, but 2weeks later when it is all scratched up, & your phone dies, which part was is cheaper? The cheap one, made with 33% less wire in the lines that caused the logic-board to burn up because it wasn't made to OEM specs.and was only getting 2mha, instead of the 4mha it was engineered to get? You went out and the highest quality, nicest phone there is, fix it right, what your wanting to do is like putting a set of donut spare tires on a new Lexus LS 400. Just because you pay the least money for something doesn't make it the least expensive.

You can buy it separately and just place LCD on the glass and works fine. My friend has a repair shop and told me he does it like this all the time. Now if your glass get broken there is no was of separating LCD from Glass but is not impossible.

Thanks for the response.

Have you seen any of these repair units come back? If yes, did they have a significant amount of dust or debris between the LCD and screen? How about the LCD unit itself, do you know if it slides around much or if your friend uses some kind of adhesive (even tape) to secure the LCD?

Thanks,

IPhone screens can also be damaged or destroyed by water damage. If you cannot afford to insure your iPhone for this type of damage, then it is good to know that your iPhone 4 screen can be easily replaced with iphone screen replacement.
