i do not have any sound. I have been using an external speaker and air phones and this has been working up to last week end. yet when I Skype i can hear the person and they can hear me clearly. I do not understand what Pram/SMC is that I have been told to try to reset.

You can locate your systems serial number in the 'About This Mac' and paste it here: EveryMac - Lookup. then paste the systems URL link here for us to see what you have. Once we know we can guide you on how to fix your system.
Sadly, there are many different versions of MacBook's & MacBook Pro's without knowing what you have its very difficult to know what is the best way to fix things here.
