Erratic keyboard, unregistered keypresses

Hi,

I bought a used Macbook Pro (2007, 2.2Ghz), my problem is that the keyboard misses some letters that I type.

I've tried several firmware updates but I've come to believe it's hardware related. Some people seem to have the same issues with this model but I couldn't find any definitive answers.

The keys are all working, it's just that you have to insist (press it another time) sometimes to get it registere. It's highly annoying because I have to carefully proof read everything.

The Macbook was almost brand new.

Is it worth the try to replace the keyboard ?

The complete line of pre unibody MBPs suffered from failing solder joints from the USB controller underneath the trackpad ( trackpad and keyboard are wired internally via USB ). The faults range from occasionally failing keys to complete loss of keyboard and TP.

It is possible but not easy to resolder these joints. I've done it before, worked sometimes.

I don't think the keyboard itself is guilty. If a repair fails you will have to replace the upper case.

Whoa thanks, that's the first time I hear about that.

Is there any guide to check the joints ?

Actually the trackpad never seems to fail and the keyboard always works except that it "forgets" some keystrokes.

I can't be shure of course. What I did was to retip all the solder joints with a really small iron. You need a steady hand. The chip is square and labelled something like C8.... or 8C.....

With a strong magnifier you can read the labelling and google the specs. The chip is in fact far more than a mere USB controller but Apple apparently uses it just for that.

For a quick check squeeze a folded piece of paper between battery and trackpad board and see if it remedies anything.
