Pretty sure -1 is a hardware error. Anyways, you're there now. I would put the phone into dfu, and restore the phone. Whatever hasn't been saved, is lost now. You can restore to a backup, either through the cloud, or iTunes

Plug your device into your computer with a USB cable.

Turn off the device.

Hold the Power button for 3 seconds.

Hold the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds.

Release the Power button but keep holding the Home button

ITunes error -1 is baseband firmware failure to load. It is the eeprom ic failing to communicate with the modem hardware issue 100% either cracked ball on the modem data line or damaged eeprom. You will have to take it to a capable technician with eeprom programming equipment.

When updating it is better to update over WiFi as this fault is a restore fault. It will not be prevalent until restore

do you mean you might have this damaged hardware in your phone, and not know it, if all you have been doing is updating occasionally....but then, if you decide to restore/recover....THAT'S when the issue makes itself known....?

My daugher had an issue while trying to update her 5c at home connected to an iMac via wifi, and decided to fully erase the phone first/restore mode (there was nothing really she cared about on it yet, she'd just gotten it).....and when it got to the firmware part, it got stuck and gave an Error 48 message. I tried a recovery myself, on another computer, a PC, and get Error -1! But both times it just stops there, mid-recover....and so the iPhone is useless, it can't do anything, it has that picture of the lightning cable pointing towards the iTunes logo perpetually onscreen!!

You're saying there was/is something physically wrong with hardware within the iPhone that is causing the recover to not be able to continue?

Option A - Fix Recovery Stuck iPhone with Tiny Umbrella*

Download Tiny Umbrella choosing either the Windows or Mac version.

While your iPhone is stuck in recovery mode, connect it to the computer using your iPhone USB cable.

Open Tiny Umbrella and after a few moments it will recognise your device, it will also register that your iPhone is in recovery mode.

Once the software has recognised your iPhone is in recovery mode, the ‘Exit Recovery’ button below will become active. Click this button to kick your iPhone out of recovery mode.

After this, your device should begin to boot up normally.

Option B – Fix iPhone stuck in recovery mode with iTunes Restore*

*Please note if you follow this method of fixing an iPhone stuck in recovery mode, all the data and settings on the iPhone will be erased before restoration. Your device will be restored to your last iTunes backup. However there is a way to recover deleted data directly from your iPhone when this happens. This way you will be able to recover data obtained since your last iTunes backup.

Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes. To do this, open iTunes and click Help in the main menu. Then select Check for Updates, iTunes will then tell you if you are using the latest version. You may need to download the latest iTunes version before you continue.

Hold the home button down (on the front of your iPhone) and connect the device to your laptop/PC while iTunes is open. A message should pop up and say that your iPhone is in recovery mode and needs to be restored.

Click on your device (in the iTunes windows) along the main toolbar, then go to the Summary tab.

Select the restore option.

Follow the prompts in iTunes to backup your iPhone settings.

Restore your iPhone back to its previous settings.
