Is there any way to reuse the xclamps

I have seen several other guides for xbox mods where the xclamps are put back in-this is before RROD appears-basically they are trying to prevent RROD. so the question is.... do the guides recommend washers and bolts because the xclamp is useless or because they found another way of doing the same job?

I repaired my xbox with an online set of bolts, but have now been given a friends to repair and am wondering if we can get away with just redoing the thermal paste and reapplying the xclamps.

I don't recommend reapplying the x-clamps, as they are most likely a contributing factor to the RROD in the first place.

One bolt through the backside of mobo (no washers, washers raise the center of the mobo up more in relation to the standoff's that encompass the inside edge of the metal cage = instant flex)...on the topside of the mobo, one nylon washer, then one metal washer, then the heat sinks.

Speaking from experience, over 200 reflows performed, have never reapplied the x-clamps.

thanks for that, thought you'd say that but thought if you don't ask you won't find out. if you only use washers on one side how tight/what length bolt are you using. I'd appreciate any hints you can give..

Sure thing. You'll want to use:

M5-0.8 x 12 mm Phillips Pan Head Machine Screws

M5 Flat Washers

M5 Nylon Washers

You can purchase all of these at Lowes or similar store. For bulk purchase, I recommend http://www.fastenermart.com/.

Tighten snug, until you feel that first bit of real resistance.

just to let all know who follow this question. I followed Chad's advice and it has worked like a charm. far easier than another repair i did using extra washers on the bottom of the motherboard!I'd upvote again but it won't let me. Thanks again.

Glad it worked for you!

Chad while this post is 9 months old... I appreciate someone putting REAL details on screw and washer parameters somewhere... I agree that the xclamps contribute to the overheating problem. I have 3 working xbox consoles. 1 was recently repaired by Microsoft and overheated again within 4months of the Microsoft repair; being out of warranty and having already purchased my fair share or xboxes and extended warranties etc... i thought i would try this! Works GREAT! Thank you for the necessary information to complete the repair myself!

I agree, DO NOT reuse them(Chad)

Instead, put them in your parts bin and save them for something less prone to failure, just don't do anything overboard with them
