How could I do this?

Ok, so I have two ibooks. One is the 12 inch and the other is the clamshell. I recently downgraded my 12 inch, but it was still freezing every once in a while, and I upgraded my clamshell as well to 10.3 and it runs completely flawlessly; it doesn't have one issue, so I have been using my fourth generation ipod on the clamshell, but there is a problem. My clamshell does not have a fire wire port for this one. Would I be able to use itunes with the USB on the clamshell and just charge it on the 12 inch? I already charged it on the 12 inch because you don't even have to have the computer turned on the charge it, but I guess the main question is can I put music onto this one using a USB cord?

Sarah, I am not sure about your 1st generation, I do use a 3rd generation that charges over Firewire but uses USB for data transfer. I have a wall charger for the Fire wire and sync over USB at the same time. I would suspect that this should work for you as well the way you have it planned. The cables for the 3rd Gen were available on ebay a couple weeks ago, so you might find them by doing a google search. Give it a try and good luck

The first generation actually takes a different cable then the third. The third has a dock where as the first one has the firewire connection on both sides. That's why I am kind of afraid to try it. I know because I my third generation just got stolen :(

You are of course absolutely correct. The Ipod 1st gen only used Firewire with no USB support. I apologize on that. Since it has no USB support I feel that you won't sync with a USB cord. Ever considered to use a Firewire-to-USB adapter and see if it works? They are not to expensive and it may give you another option. http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-a-firewi... and here is one of those. http://www.meritline.com/ieee-1394-firew... Good luck and let us know.

Thank you! I am definitely going to look into that adapter. Although this ipod is more of a collectors item, I still want it as a back up.

I'm pretty sure this only works (data wise) on a firewire cable unfortunately.
