Many screens have anti-reflective coatings or mate finishes on them so any polish or abrasive will just scrub it off creating shiny splotches which in my opinion looks worse!
Depending on the TV you might be able to order a new cover glass. But, as the cost of TV's has fallen you may not be able to get larger sized replacement parts as the manufacture assumes you'll just replace the set as it would be cheaper.

One thing you can try is using some vaseline on the scratches and then buff it out using a microfibre cloth. I found this works on minor scratched on my monitor but depending on if you have glass on your screen it might be different. Its worth a shot and it cant hurt if it doesn't work. and if it doesn't, just follow @danj above as he has the next best thing.
