My Maytag fridge freezer is cold, but fridge is not.

The refrigerator compartment is warm, but the freezer is cold. The evaporator coil was frosted over. How can I fix it?

Thanks for the help. I checked the heater and it had continuity. So I replaced the defrost thermostat and my fridge is now cooling properly. However, once the freezer got cold again (after I plugged the fridge in) i placed the old defrost thermostat in and it had continuity. I don't know why the new one worked if the old one had continuity.

Hi,

I believe I'm having the same issue. The freezer side is cold and the fridge isn't cold enough. I've changed it to the highest setting but I can feel that the temperature is dropping. My model number is MSD2542VEW01. can you offer some assistance? Thank you.

Hi @frankusm2 ,

What is the model number of the fridge?

After the evaporator coil was defrosted does the evaporator fan work when the fridge is on? You'll have to listen for it as it will be stopped if the doors are open. (Unless you know where the door switches are that is)

If not check the fan and replace if faulty. Use an Ohmmeter (disconnect power from fridge) to check for continuity through the fan.

If fan OK check the defrost heater and make sure that it is OK. Use an Ohmmeter (disconnect power from fridge) to check for continuity through the heater.

If heater OK check the defrost thermostat to see if it is OK.

Cause 1

The Evaporator Coils are Frosted Over

The defrost heater assembly turns on a few times throughout the day to melt away any frost that may have accumulated on the evaporator coils. If the defrost heater assembly is defective, frost will continue to accumulate on the evaporator coils, and the coils will become plugged with frost. If the evaporator coils are frosted over, the airflow through the coils will be restricted, causing the refrigerator not to cool. Check the evaporator coils to determine if they are frosted over. If the evaporator coils are frosted over, test each component of the defrost system.

Cause 2

Evaporator Fan Motor

The evaporator fan motor draws cold air over the evaporator coils and circulates it throughout the freezer. If the evaporator fan is not working, the freezer or refrigerator will not cool adequately. To determine if the evaporator fan motor is defective, try turning the fan blade by hand. If the fan blade does not turn freely, replace the fan motor. Additionally, if the motor is unusually noisy, replace it. Finally, if the motor does not run at all, use a multimeter to test the motor windings for continuity. If the windings do not have continuity, replace the evaporator fan motor..

Cause 3

Damper Control Assembly

The air damper control opens and closes to let the proper amount of cold air into the refrigerator compartment. If the damper does not open properly, it won’t let enough cold air into the refrigerator. Check the damper control to determine if it is broken or stuck closed.

I have a similar issue to Frank Lesh, except evaporator coils are fine.

When freezer door is open, I feel cold air being vented into the fridge. When freezer door is closed, no cold air vents into the fridge. Checked Damper unit and it appears to be ok.

Do I have an issue with a sensor or the control unit?

Hi @ Lou Ann Robbins,

If the evaporator fan in the freezer compartment is working OK and not frozen over or faulty, you may have a faulty damper control assembly - part #11 that is not allowing enough cold air from the freezer section to be passed into the fridge section so that the required temp is reached, for both the ice maker and the rest of the fridge section.

Hi,

The ice maker relies on the freezing cold air being blown by the evaporator fan from the freezer section to freeze the water in the ice maker to make ice etc.

To my knowledge the damper controls the air flow. So if the fridge is either too warm (or even too cold) it may be the damper that is the problem.

The ice maker is only there to make ice.

The ice maker may also help to maintain the set temp in the fridge when it has ice in it and therefore reduce the load on the compressor. Not quite sure if this is correct though ;-)

There is a video that is linked to the part #11 listing in the link I posted above which shows how to replace the damper control.

Check if you can hear the evaporator fan running when the compressor is running. The evaporator fan supplies the cold air to both the freezer and the fridge to cool both compartments. Since the evaporator unit is in the freezer compartment the freezer will stay cold just because the unit is located there. Like a big ice block.

Place your ear next to the fridge and listen for the fan. It will stop running when a door (either door) is opened and start again when the door is shut

The evaporator fan is in the freezer compartment behind a panel. Do not confuse this fan with the condenser fan which is outside the compartments near the compressor and is used to cool the condenser and the compressor and runs whether the doors are open or not.

If you can’t hear the fan at all it may be that it is either faulty, iced up or perhaps a door switch may be faulty.

To check the last possibility, with a door open check if the lights go out in the compartment when you manually operate the door switch. The door switch not only tells the control board to turn on the light, it is also used to let the control board know that a door is open and to turn off the evaporator fan in the freezer section as you don’t want to blow the cold air out of the fridge or freezer.

The following should be done with the power totally disconnected from the refrigerator

If the evaporator fan is iced up there could be a problem with the fan itself, the defrost heater, a blocked drain tube, the temp sensor in the freezer or the control board.

Defrost the ice from the evaporator and the fan and then check if the drain is not blocked by pouring a little bit of water down the drain and checking if it gets to the evaporator pan under the fridge.

If it is OK then use an Ohmmeter to check if the defrost heater, which is under the evaporator unit is OK

If the defrost heater is OK, check if the temp sensor (thermister) is OK.

If all the above test OK plug the power back into the fridge and watch its’ operation.

Check that the fan operates. If not it may be faulty

The fridge should run to drive the temps back down and it should stop at least once every 6-10 hours to perform an auto defrost cycle. This is where the compressor stops and the temp in the freezer is allowed to rise to 32 deg F which allows the ice build up to melt and drain away to the evap pan under the fridge.

If the auto defrost cycle doesn’t kick in then the problem is the control board

The auto defrost cycle lasts about 20-30 minutes and is sped up by the defrost heater being turned on, as you don’t want the food to even start to thaw.

When the sensor tells the control board that the temp is ~32 F the compressor is started again to drive the temps back down.

I have the same problem with my model MSD2574VEM10 Mfd 06/09 . l feel the air blowing from left vent of fridge but not as cold as before even in coldest.

Have you checked that the condenser coils and fan- part #3 & #2 unit parts are clean and free of dust etc?

What are the actual temps in the refrigerator and the freezer compartments, not just what it feels like?

Can you hear if the evaporator fan is running?

You may have to press an ear to the fridge to hear it. You can make it stop and start by opening a door (fan stops) and closing it (fan starts). The fan will be running if the compressor motor is running.

If you can't hear the fan and the compressor is running you need to remove the panel in the freezer section to gain access to the evaporator fan to check if it is working or if it is iced over. Also check the amount of ice covering the evaporator unit. A small amount is normal as it will be removed during the auto defrost mode.

If the fan is iced over you may have a auto defrost problem or a fan motor problem or both.

If you can hear the fan OK then you may have a damper problem, a thermistor problem or a control board problem all can affect the temp in the fridge section.

Is the temp in the freezer section OK?

If the evaporator fan is not running either the fan motor is faulty, the fan is iced up or there is a problem between the control board and the fan. It won’t turn when a door is open, so either press the door switch in the freezer door jamb to simulate that the door is closed and watch the fan operate or mark the fan blade with a marker close the door wait a minute and then check if the blade has moved position in relation to where it was before.

If you have an Ohmmeter you can test the fan motor for electrical continuity. Be sure to disconnect the power from the fridge before doing this.

If the fan motor is faulty, here’s a link to the fan part section in the freezer. Scroll to find part #26 in the list to see the cost of the part. It is only shown to give you an idea of the cost of the part. There are other suppliers that may suit you better. Just search for MBF2258XEB3 parts to get results.

If the fan blades are iced up you have a defrost thermostat or defrost heater problem.

I have a Maytag plus fridge. Model# is: MZD2766GEB. It isn't keeping my food cold. Freezer works fine, except for taking a long time for ice cubes to freeze.
