No sound through headphones and speakers

Since some time I suddenly have no sound through the headphones output nor through the internal speakers.

When you look at sound settings in system preferences, no internal speakers are shown nor does the headphone output show when something is plugged in.

Do get sound through USB->external audio-bridge but lately the sound is getting distorted more and more and at random.

Tried all I could think of and what was suggested online; PRAM reset, SMC reset, pick tooth in headphone bus, even a rain dance and more.

No success :-(

I slowly suspect that the sound card is broken.

Could this be the case and can this only be repaired by completely replacing the logic/motherboard because the soundcard is integrated with it?

Tell me if there is a red light in the headphone jack.

Checked it several times but I do believe nothing is burning in the socket.

No, that wouldn't be burning. I don't understand it completely but there is a censor in the jack that can get bumped and it will disconnect your sound. If I am correct, but I don't know how to exactly explain it.

I tried all mentioned above.

When I startup I also don't get a startup chime sound.

When I check about this Mac, System overview, Audio, I see Intel High Definition Audio, when I selected that the following shows: Audiocode: 0

Can that be considered as a hardware failure since no specific audio card is shown? Or is that normal?

Thank you all for trying to help out!

Unfortunately none of the suggested solutions solve the issue so I plan to visit an Apple Service center soon.

Hi .it sounds weird...it should be fixed with reinstalling OSX... but reinstalling from start...

Check this but i guess you already did :

also do a reset holding

Option-Command-P-R keys all together before the gray screen appears.

Continue holding these keys until computer restarts for 4 times, then release those keys and allow to restart normally..

Sometimes this problem can happening without reason at all and come back...

I had exactly this problem with same imac because accidentally i deleted an essential file doing some testings..

reinstalling OSX will fix it but first take these files you want because will lost any personal files or serials.

Hello again. Because my answer was not so detailed.... It depends of what OSX version you running. If its Snow Leopard i dont think you can do anything only to reinstall OSX as i wrote before..

Before that as final try put a suitable headphones jack at behind imac and do that 4 or more times and check at system preferences at sound if internal speakers appear .play with output volume bar and make some restarts..

Also try to restart at safe mode holding down shift till osx is loaded. then restart normal..If did not fixed then reinstall OSX..

If you running Yosemite or later check if airplayXPC helper is running at activity monitor..

I am running El Capitan 10.11.6, already tried sticking in tooth picks, paper clips and headphone jacks in the socket - multiple times, tried safe mode starting, tried re-installing as well.

Also no chime sound is bad...

try last this..open terminal ( its at applications -utilities -terminal and after your user name at terminal window copy paste this:

sudo killall coreaudiod

it will ask for your password ..type it correctly because you will not see the result.. see what it will write there..then restart..

Also at system profiler at left..after audio(built in) check what is the result at diagnostic...look for the date to be recent..

run also the apple hardware test to see if you have any hardware code problem..

then if nothing fixed looks like hardware issue and sound card is together with motherboard (: and its better to take it to an Apple store to fix it..

Tried the sudo command several times in the past and today but to no avail.

Same with the AHT.

I also suspect it is hardware related, in the meanwhile found some other reports about the exact same problem but with no solution either.

No startup chime is significant I fear.

Now its completely strange...do something..put at headphones jack a suitable headphones. Shut down imac wearing the headphones and start it again...can you hear any type of sound? maybe its silly this i telling you but someone fixed it like that...

Be sure that you using the headphone input ! Also it is not nessesary to put headphones..My imac is working with 4way stereo speakers via 120w amplifier...

if not, then im sorry, i cannot help anymore from here (:

The only thing coming in my mind is ..to make a complete osx reinstall ..

Did you tried the recovery?restart holding alt...

search also how to unload and load the core audio daemon...

When there is no sound, try recording on the device if a sound is output, the earphone or microphone has nothing to do with the defect.the defect in ic audio replacement
